Anti-Flag enter studio with Tony Visconti for next full-length

Anti-Flag Anti-Flag has entered the studio to begin work on their next full legth, this time with producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie, Morrissey). The album will be the follow up to 2006’s RCA debut, For Blood and Empire.

According to #2:

In a sense we are trying to create the most D.I.Y. record we’ve ever made. This concept is precisely why we chose Tony Visconti to aid us in our vision. This is the first album we have not recorded with a click track since our first release and we are trying to make it sound as live and having as much energy as possible. When writing songs for this album we set out to challenge ourselves and anyone who has any preconceived notion of what Anti-Flag means, believes in, stands for and sounds like.

On October 02, 2007, the band will be releasing the EP, A Benefit for Victims of Violent Crime with proceeds going to The Center for Victims of Violence and Crime.

Adolescents: “Beyond Hurt, Beyond Help” (unrecorded Germs song)

The Adolescents have posted a cover of an unrecorded Germs song entitled “Beyond Hurt, Beyond Help.” The song will only be up for this week or so, and you can find it streaming on their MySpace page.

The song was recorded “about a month ago” at DOB Sound for the Japanese release of the 1996 Germs tribute compilation, A Small Circle of Friends.

The band last released O.C. Confidential in 2005 via Finger, though as of March they were writing new material.

David Fuentes (1971-2007)

Unfortunate news has come in from celebrated LA ska band Hepcat. Bassist Dave Fuentes has passed away. Details are currently slim, but the band announced the following this past weekend:

“We are sad to announce that our brother, beloved band mate and amazing friend, David Fuentes, is no longer with us. He will be missed by everyone but especially everyone in the Hepcat family.”

Fuentes had also been playing as a member of the Aggrolites following their recent line up shuffle.

Punknews.org offers our deepest condolences to his friends and family.

September 23rd, 2007

It’s Sunday, September 23rd, 2007. Now that the Canadian dollar has reached parity with the greenback we can reverse the brain drain of Canuck talent to the States. That goes for Punknews editors too. Chris, Brian, Justin, Meg: come home to Tuktoyaktuk. Your mother misses you.

The people must have something good to read on a Sunday

I’ve had to train myself not to read the associated comment threads, but it’s always a fun week when the Sex Pistols are back in the news. Despite their recently announced 30th anniversary show the big story didn’t actually come from the band Canadian telco Bell caused a controversy by running an ad featuring a “Belsen Was a Gas” pin, which they quickly pulled considering the reference. Johnny didn’t let the spotlight waver for long though, turning heads by lambasting Sting and the recently reunited Police. Late era Ramones drummer Richie emerged from obscurity this week, suing the estate of Johnny Ramone, Apple, Wal-Mart and Real over use of his songs. We had more tour dates for the Lawrence Arms, American Steel, the Falcon and Sundowner tour, with news that Eli Catere of the Smoking Popes would be playing guitar for the Falcon. Tom Delonge talked up the new Angels & Airwaves record and his 30 year plan to change the world. The band released their new video for “Everything’s Magic” this week as well.

There were more details revealed on the recent scuffle between Brent Hinds of Mastodon and System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian. A high school student was suspended for hanging an All Time Low poster, as men in underwear are potentially the greatest threat to the American education system. This week also had news of a Kid Dynamite tribute compilation, a discussion of Fall Out Boy‘s Invisible Children benefit video, and scant details on a new EP from AFI. Finally we had a few updates from former Island acts Thursday and Thrice. The former detailed their “Kill the House Lights” collection while the latter previewed a pair of songs from their next.

This week featured a chat with East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys (interview). Our Video of the Week featured part three of our video countdown to the Fest 6. This week we checked out the some footage of the Pink Razors. The ninth edition of Vinyl File featured the first part of two part look at the vinyl out put of modern punk favourites the Alkaline Trio and previewed lots of upcoming wax. We also streamed new music from
