Thrice: “Fire Breather,” “Digital Sea”

ThriceThrice has posted streams of two new songs. “Fire Breather” and “Digital Sea” can be listened to at the band’s MySpace page.

The songs are taken from the band’s forthcoming, highly anticipated full-length, The Alchemy Index: Volumes 1 & 2, which is due out October 16, 2007 and is composed of the Fire and Water EPs. It’ll follow up 2005’s Vheissu.

After countless investments, chemical-related injuries and one unfortunate death our research department has concluded that “Fire Breather” derives from the Fire EP and “Digital Sea” from the Water EP.

The Alchemy Index: Volumes 3 & 4, which will include Earth and Air, are due in 2008.

Brendan Canty discusses Fugazi hiatus, “Burn to Shine” and new projects

Former Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty recently granted an interview to Billboard and took a moment to discuss his current projects and well as the ongoing Fugazi hiatus. Regarding the latter, he noted:

The way Fugazi is meant to function is running at full speed. When it became half, we dealt with it. At a quarter, when we had to stay home most of the time, suddenly it stopped feeling like Fugazi. Instead of waiting around years to do Fugazi, we said, ‘Let’s run in our separate directions and we’ll revisit it when it comes time.

[But] the compass isn’t pointing in that direction. If it pointed us together and something made sense, sure. I love those guys. They’re my brothers. I could see plugging back in and doing it. We didn’t end fighting and we wouldn’t start again fighting.

We’ve turned down a lot of money in the past to do things we weren’t comfortable with. Fugazi would get together to play Maxwell’s [in Hoboken, N.J.]. We wouldn’t get together to play Coachella. No amount of money would get us out of our houses.

Meanwhile, Canty continues to work on a number of projects including his Burn to Shine series as well as a new musical project with Ian Svenonius of The Make-Up and Nation of Ulysses.

Dave Grohl discusses Kurt and Courtney

Dave Grohl, formerly of Nirvana and currently of the Foo Fighters finally spoke candidly about the controversial relationship between late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love in a new Guardian interview.

In addressing the rumour that a song from the Foo Fighters’ new album is about the couple, he explained:

[It’s] a song that’s written about feeling helpless to someone else’s demise. I’ve seen people lose it all to drugs and heartbreak and death. It’s happened more than once in my life, but the one that’s most noted is Kurt.

There are a lot of people that I’ve been angry with in my life, but the one that’s most noted is Courtney. So it’s pretty obvious to me that those correlations are gonna pop up every now and again. I still remain a little secretive about it all..

The new record is titled Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace and is due out September 25, 2007

Gallows singer splits head open, finishes song

Gallows vocalist Frank Carter is in the news again, this time with a pretty brutal onstage injury during the popular hardcore/punk act’s gig at Stoke Sugarmill.. The incident took place at a maximum capacity show where the band had asked not to have a barrier between the audience and the stage.

Fans piled on to the stage one by one, stagediving and singing with Carter. Shortly into the set, Carter and one fan mock-wrestled and sang together, but both tumbled over in the commotion. Carter’s forehead smashed against the floor, and he started bleeding from the wound. Despite this, he continued the song before leaving the stage and heading to the hospital to get stiches for the head wound.

The band released Orchestra of Wolves in the United States via Epitaph this year.

Epitaph pulls catalogue from eMusic

Digital music pioneers eMusic have been dealt another blow, as Epitaph Records along with their associated labels like Anti- and Hellcat, have pulled their catalogues from the service. The blog 17 dots, which is run by eMusic employees but not an official endeavor of the company, posted an commentary and offered some background on the decision:

As many of you know, Epitaph has been a notable supporter of eMusic for many years, back to when eMusic was just beginning. Unfortunately for all of us, they have decided that we can only continue to sell their music to you if we agree to charge you iTunes prices — 99 cents a song. Obviously this isn’t something we’re comfortable doing.

At a time when the music industry is in such steep decline, our research and experience shows us that consumers are still willing to buy music, provided the value is right. And 99 cents a song is not an acceptable price point for all consumers. That’s one reason why eMusic exists and has been so successful; those consumers who are willing to spend more on music (provided the price is right) do so with us. You spend more than 14 times as much as the average iTunes customer at a time when per capita spending on all music and audio is under $24. You buy twenty times more music than the average iTunes customer.

eMusic touts itself as the world’s largest retailer of independent music and is the second-largest digital music service after iTunes. They’ve sold more than 150 million downloads, but their DRM free model and low pricing (which can dip as low as 27 cents per song depending on the monthly subscription model chosen) has made it unpalatable to the major labels and several large independents. In April of this year Victory Records also pulled their catalogue.
