Me First and the Gimme Gimmes detail “Dolly” seven-inch

Me First and The Gimme Gimmes have detailed their upcoming seven inch. The record is titled Dolly and is due out October 16, 2007. It is the first new release from the band since Love Their Country which was released in 2006.

As this single will be the first in the “Square Dance” series, the vinyl itself will actually be cut into a square instead of the traditional, uhm, circle shape. There will be 1000 pressed and they will be available only through Fat Mailorder.

As expected, the disc will include two covers, “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” both by Dolly Parton. The former appeared on Love Their Country and the latter is previously unreleased. It also has a weird historical context in that in 2002, the Iraqi government held a referendum asking whether Saddam Hussein should remain as president. Pro-Hussein advertising before the election featured the song. That isn’t in the press release, but we thought you should know.

Against Me! to host acoustic benefit for Harvest of Hope

Against Me! will be hosting a special benefit for Harvest of Hope in Chicago during their upcoming tour. The venue is promising an acoustic performance and the openers, including Sage Francis, Cobra Skulls and World/Inferno Friendship Society will also be performing.

According to the Harvest of Hope website, the charity provides migrant farmworkers and their families with emergency aid, gives grants to families, provides financial aid to migrant students attending college and works with other agencies that benefit migrant workers. This is presumably not the same charity as the Christian missionary, also called Harvest of Hope.

Tickets will go on-sale tomorrow afternoon.

First details/comments on new Thursday material surface

The blog mentions three new songs, “Ladies and Gentlemen: My Brother, the Failure,” “Dead Songs” and “Voices on a String” and much of the commentary talks about the band’s heavy riffs as well as drawing comparisons to songs like “Jet Black New Year,” “Counting…,” and even a mention of Every Time I Die.

D.O.A. announce “Smash the State” DVD, release show

Canadian punk staple D.O.A. have announced an upcoming DVD titled Smash the State. Included will be raw footage shot at four shows in the San Francisco/Bay Area and the Canada Day Anarchist Picnic in Vancouver.

Featuring the band’s original lineup of Joe Shithead Keithley, Chuck Biscuits, Randy Rampage and Dave Gregg, the DVD includes 21 tracks, interviews, newscasts, footage of the day anarcho punks took over Vancouver’s Stanley Park on July 1st, 1978 and guest appearances by Keith Morris (Circle Jerks), Dirk Dirksen (Mabuhay Gardens/San Francisco punk guru), JB Shayne (legendary Vancouver DJ) and Zippy Pinhead (Los Popularos, The Dils).

Joe Shithead commented on the compilation:

I really wanted people to see the original version of D.O.A. performing. You know, the completely raw band that went out and took on the world. So I gathered together some of the best footage I could find and came up with Smash the State. Most of the footage is taken from shows in San Francisco and the East Bay. This makes a lot of sense, as San Francisco became D.O.A.’s home away from home in the late seventies and into the eighties.

The DVD will be released September 25th, 2007 via Joe Shithead’s Sudden Death Records. There will be a release show Thursday, September 27th at The Plaza Club in Vancouver, where the band will perform along with special guests The Jolts.

So we’ve decided that it’s our time to move onto other things. We leave this behind with no regrets or bitterness. We hope to see you there. We can’t thank you all enough for the years of love and support.

The band released Moving Units and reissued their debut Paint the Town last year.
