Crush Luther (2002-2007)

Toronto, Ontario’s Crush Luther has called it a day. The band announced the breakup via their MySpace blog, stating:

We’ve decided to call it a day. Crush Luther is breaking up. Our band is breaking up. Yeah. It’s really strange to say that out loud. Or type. Same diff. no foul. Matt, Luther and I have spent a lot of time together discussing our options. To be honest, a month ago, none of us expected that this would be happening. Unfortunately after much time spent, that’s where we’re at. We’re just not in love with the idea of keeping the band alive enough to continue on.

The 5 of us had tons of amazing times together – between touring, recording, rehearsing and hanging out. I don’t think any one of us would trade what we’ve been lucky enough to do for anything!

The band was signed to High 4 Records, run by Vicky and Darrin (Goldfinger) Pfeiffer. Final shows are expected to be announced in Southern Ontario this December.

Music downloading and “The entitlement mentality”

With all the recent discussion about piracy and the shutdown of music downloading site OINK, someone has posted an article looking at the reasons that some artists are wary of downloading:

Someone that received the promotional copy decided to place the album on a Torrent site. Now anyone can download your album for free and you won’t see a single penny. Though you want people to hear your music, you also want to fulfill the part of your contract that requires you to sell fifteen thousand copies.

Yes, artists are given more exposure when albums hit BitTorrent sites. If the album is loved, album sales reflect this and some of the loss is recouped. Recording and marketing music isn’t free, and music consumers shouldn’t expect it to be.
