Happy Edge Day

It’s October 17, 2007, Edge Day. The celebration of Edge, and you can take part by checking out a local straight edge hardcore show, getting a sick XXEDGEXX tattoo and abstaining from booze, drugs and smoking while yelling “True till death.” Of course, it’s a work day so if you’re going to work drunk, stoned and smoking, you’ve got a particularly interesting workplace and Chris wants to know if they’re hiring.

The first annual National Edge Day was celebrated on October 17, 1999 at the final Ten Yard Fight concert at the nightclub Karma in Boston, Massachusetts. The concert also featured the bands Bane, In My Eyes, Fastbreak, Reach The Sky and Floorpunch. This show marked the end of the 1990s youth crew revival.

Since then, National Edge Day has been celebrated in certain cities, such as Boston.

Death Cab for Cutie guitarist’s solo album confiscated by Homeland Security

Chris Walla, the guitarist and producer of Death Cab for Cutie recently found himself on the strange end of the law when a hard drive containing his solo album was seized by Homeland Security.

Walla had been working on the album in Canada and was shipping it to his label, Barsuk, when it was seized and given to Homeland Security’s computer forensics departments, probably in a search for Osama bin Laden who may be hiding on the hard drive. He added:

[The courier] got to the border and he had all his paperwork and it was all cool, only they turned him away, and they confiscated the drive and gave it to the computer-forensics division of our Homeland Security-type people, And now I couldn’t even venture a guess as to where it is, or what it’s doing there. I mean, I can’t just call their customer-service center and ask about my drive. There’s nothing I can do. I don’t know if we can hire an attorney … is there a black-hole attorney? You can’t take a black hole to court.

You can find the rest of the odd story here.

Silver Sprocket launches website, signs Ashtray, produces “Officer Jackets”

Silver Sprocket, the bicycle club founded by the Springman Records crew, launched their new website last week. Promising a steady stream of exclusive online content, the site so far features a podcast by Roxy of The Epoxies and a live acoustic track from Greg Attonito of The Bouncing Souls with his wife Shanti Wintergate.

The label has also released their first non-music item. Rather than sell regular clothing with screen-printed band logos, the limited edition PhenomenautsOfficer Jackets” were designed by the band from scratch. The first run of 100 is nearly sold out, with a limited second edition planned for a holiday release.

Upcoming projects from Silver Sprocket include jackets, shoes, books and toys, along with more limited edition vinyl, working with bands previously on the Springman roster, plus their friends like The Slackers and Epoxies.< Silver Sprocket has signed Ashtray, from Santa Rosa, CA. The five-year-old quintet features male and female lead-vocals, with clear influences from notable east bay bands Blatz and Filth. Silver Sprocket is promising to release Ahstray’s sophomore full-length sometime in 2008, and is offering a free MP3 download of the song Punk Rock Candy Mountain from the band’s recent split with the Secretions and Final Summation.
