Billie Joe comments on Al Gore win, encourages people to contact Congress

Kudos has been coming in from Al Gore fans on his recent Nobel Peace Prize win, the latest from Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong who took the opportunity to congratulate the former Futurama character:

I just heard that Al Gore just won the Nobel Peace prize for his work in the fight against global warming. I think it’s great that this issue is finally getting the recognition it deserves. It’s becoming a part of our everyday lives. People aren’t just talking about it, we’re really starting to live it. And I feel that Al Gore has been very influential in bringing this into the mainstream. Kudos to you, Al Gore.

He also encourages people to get involved with the National Resources Defense Council and contact congress via this form.

Besides winning the Nobel, Al Gore will be returning to Futurama for an appearance in Bender’s Big Score. For reals.

Black Tie Bombers (2004-2007)

Southern Ohio’s Black Tie Bombers have called it quits. Apparently the split happened some time ago:

What a sweet movie….anyway, we broke up awhile ago. Ryan wasn’t really feeling it anymore and the rest of us didn’t feel like doing it without him. Josh got a new job and I suppose is the first one of us to be an adult for once. He’s moving to pa soon. Ryan is in a band called Dead! Serious. they have a myspace. Jon and I are in a band called The Dopamines. we have one too. Sam Banta who left BTB quite awhile ago is still in The Starkweathers and of course they have a myspace.

The band goes on to talk about their “final show that no one really knew was going to be a final show” and say that chances of an “official” one are bleak. The band released Eternal Happiness and Good Health this year as well as their split with the Frankl Project.

Jack Terricloth, frontman of World Inferno Friendship Society has launched a new advice column through The Syndicate. In the first edition, Jack lays down the law regarding sex tapes, saying:

If we are to believe that great art exults then we must accept that pornography corrupts. Secrets also corrupt. You should ask yourself why this friend of yours wants to spread guilt around like some sort of informational virus.

RIAA still claiming membership from non-affiliated labels

The RIAA is still claiming to speak for labels which have specifically not associated with them. The industry trade organization has frequently listed labels on their roster who either have not become members or have outright philosophical disagreements with the trade group’s tactics.

As early as this incident in 2003, the organization claimed membership from labels like Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph and Relapse and more recently has included Trustkill in the list of affiliated labels. Though the names had disappeared when contested, with each redesign of riaa.org, the labels reappear with both Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph and Relapse listed there now.

Most recently, one of our readers contacted Trustkill to look into it and the label has apparently asked to be removed from the site. The organization has become infamous for heavy-handed tactics against music pirates (or music fans, depending on your view) and has spawned sites that encourage fans to avoid RIAA labels. Since fans of these labels tend to be digitally savvy and aware of tactics used, some have argued that this could turn off fans.
