Taco Bell gives Strike Anywhere, Ted Leo, Big D, Panthers, Armor for Sleep free food

In what is turning in a pretty weird story, ubiquitous purveyors of refried beans Taco Bell have given $500.00 worth of free food (coupons) to a number of bands around the United States.

The “Feed the Beat” promotion claims that bands submitted applications for the contest which was open to “up-and-coming” touring bands. “Winners” include Strike Anywhere, Ted Leo, Big D, Panthers, Armor for Sleep, Manchester Orchestra, The Graduate and many others.

But that isn’t the weird part, the weird part is that at least one of these bands never entered the contest and moreover, is not too fond of being associated with the fast food powerhouse. Ted Leo wrote a letter to the company asking what was going on:

We have contacted Taco Bell and have found out that someone submitted an application from a G-mail address that is not ours (Heck of a job, G-mail!), so we have, in fact, been pranked, which, since Taco Bell is now removing our name from everything associated with this dumb-ass “Muy Caliente! Side Stage at the Altell Garden Party Pavillion” bullshit, I have to appreciate on some levels… but anyway, it was fake, we weren’t involved with Taco Bell, and now it’s over.

Ted Leo and Strike Anywhere are both associated with PETA and the vegan movement, so his reaction is not entirely surprising. No word on how many of the other applications were legitimate. We’ve sent off an email to Strike Anywhere’s people to see what they think.

Johnny Rotten talks PIL, Green Day, Britney Spears

In a story combining two of our more popular topics – Green Day and the Sex Pistols – the frontman of the latter band, Johnny “Rotten” Lydon has taken some shots at the multi-platinum, award-winning band in a new interview.

His exact words:

I love to tease that lot, because I think they’re dopey, They hold no promise, no future. They jumped on a bandwagon that was all clearly laid out for them, forgetting all the bands that did the groundwork, putting together a punk movement. They came in and said, ‘Yes, we can wear these clothes and have our hair like this, wear those boots and play music that way, and we’ll call ourselves punk.’ Not much thought went into them. Nothing — nothing original. Therefore they smell, big time. They’re like old gorgonzola cheese in old boots.

Zing. Can’t beat stinky cheese metaphors.

Lydon goes on to take plenty of well-aimed shots at Britney Spears, rules out Sex Pistols recordings and hints at a possible resurrection of PIL.

You can check it out here.

Tours: Year Long Disaster / Birds of Avalon (Europe)

Year Long Disaster and Birds of Avalon will be taking the Volcom tour to Europe this fall for a series of free shows.

Year Long Disaster are a Rock n’ Roll power trio featuring Daniel Davies (son of Kinks guitarist Dave Davies) on guitar and vocals, Rich Mullins (ex-Karma To Burn, Speedealer) on bass, and Brad Hargreaves (Third Eye Blind) behind the drum kit. Recently completing their debut full-length album recorded in Tucson, AZ with Jim Waters (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, R.L. Burnside), this self-titled effort was released in the U.S. on Oct. 9th and is set for release in Europe in early 2008. Year Long Disaster is currently on tour in the US with Turbonegro.

Birds Of Avalon features former The Cherry Valence members; the husband and wife team of Paul Siler and Cheetie Kumar. After leaving The Cherry Valence, Siler and Kumar returned to Raleigh and got to work putting together a new band, recruiting local area musicians, Craig Tilley (The Weather) on vocals, Scott Nurkin (Dynamite Brothers) on drums, and David Mueller on bass, with Siler and Kumar rounding out the group as dueling axe slingers. Birds of Avalon’s debut release, Bazaar Bazaar, was produced by Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Wilco, Let’s Active) and Birds Of Avalon, and was released in the U.S. in May.
