Justin Sane discusses new Anti-Flag record

Anti-Flag‘s Justin Sane recently sat down with our friends at ThePunkSite.com to discuss the band’s upcoming full length, The Bright Lights of America. The band discussed the new elements they tried to introduce into their sound:

We had ideas of things we wanted to do before we made the record and working with Tony Visconti we knew we were working with somebody who would know how to execute those ideas. We wanted to bring some new elements to punk rock. We brought in cello players, we brought in brass players, we brought in a lot of orchestral instruments – you know, timpani drums, and tubular bells. We even have a children’s choir on the record made out of our families’ nieces and nephews. It’s a very personal record in general. We wanted to expand in new ways and include new people in what we were doing. We felt like Tony Visconti was somebody who had experience with trying to do those things and would be able to help us supervise. What we tried to do too though was play as many instruments as we possibly could. So rather than bringing in players from the symphony to bang on the timpani, we wanted to play them ourselves. Again, because we’ve never done that before, we thought it would be helpful to have somebody who has.

The group is following up their major label debut, 2006’s For Blood and Empire. In the interview Sane also discusses plans for another solo record to follow up Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Justice.

Pinkerton Thugs to reunite

Kennebunk, Maine’s Pinkerton Thugs will reunite to play some shows in early 2008. The band, which split in 2000, had members go on to play in bands like the Unseen, Micah Blue Smaldone, the Strings and Ironside. Paul Russo commented on the band’s MySpace page:

Hey guys, just to let everyone know The Pinkerton Thugs will be playing shows again! I live in Boston again and we’ve been in the basement practicing and having a lot of fun playing music as a band again. I cannot express how much this means to me. The Thugs are something I take SO much pride in and believe in 1000%. We want to bring back the unity, message, anger, and love to the street again, where it belongs. But most of all we want everyone to have FUN. Over the years, a lot of people have enthusiastically asked us play shows again, but I can tell you no one is more excited than we are. I know I speak for the rest of the guys when I say that we are doing this because we /want/ to. The Thugs always did what we want and people always seemed to give us the room to do so. So anyway, leave us a comment, we’d love to hear from you, and see you at the shows!

Horror High signs Son Of Sam

Horror High have signed Son of Sam, the Misfits-inspired side project originally formed by Todd Youth, Davey Havok, London May and Steve Zing.

The band recorded just one album with that lineup, 2001’s Songs From The Earth. Now, 7 years later, some members of the band will be recording together for a new album. According to band leader Todd Youth:

After doing the 3 weeks of this past Halloween tour with Danzig, Steve and I had so much fun playing together again we decided the time was right for Son Of Sam II.

Though Havok is unlikely to be participating this time, the band will presumably be working with a different vocalist for a 2008 album.

Contests: Help Akimbo figure out “Navigating the Bronze”

Alternative Tentacles is throwing a contest in celebration of Akimbo‘s new full length Navigating the Bronze. Here’s the scoop:

“Dude, I totally navigated the bronze last night!”

What does that sentence mean to you? This elusive phrase has not been explicitly defined by Akimbo, the band who created this mysterious album title. Many theories have been informally offered, none to our satisfaction. However, we want to make “Navigating the Bronze” as ubiquitous as “Ghostriding the Whip” or “Oh no you dih-ent!” in the youth lexicon.

We leave it up to you, the creative AT fan, to fill in semiotic gap left wide by our well-coiffed Seattle trio. Stretch those vocab muscles and enter to win a signed vinyl copies of said album Navigating the Bronze. We have two LPs, both signed and embellished by all three members of Akimbo.

That sounds like something you guys can accomplish in your sleep.
