Death By Stereo begin studio blog, plan side project

Death By Stereo are back in the studio working on a new album and while at it have decided to chronicle their efforts with a video blog.. Band vocalist Efrem Schulz adds

Myself, Dan Palmer, Tyler Rebbe, and Chris Dalley have been writing, rehearsing and recording with our producer JASON FREESE. In true D.B.S. form, we are trying to make a record that is new and different from the last. We are always trying to change and evolve. There is some of the fastest stuff we’ve ever done on this record along with some of the most melodic stuff we’ve ever attempted as well. We are more excited than I think we have ever been about any record. We can’t wait to get this album done and get back out on the road and see all of our friends that we have not seen in so long. We also have a couple local shows coming up as well…

In the meantime, the band has a couple of shows lined up close to home including a free February 2 date at Friar Tucks in Pomona, California and a benefit show on March 8 at The vault 350 in Long Beach, California with Strung Out.

In related news, during a recent interview with Punkradiocast.com, Efrem revealed that some members of the band were working on a new side project:

I’d like to be the first one to announce this publicly, me and Dan (Palmer) are starting a Huey Lewis and The News tribute band, and this is not a joke. I’m singing, and we’re called “Chuy Luis”, Dan’s playing guitar, Dan’s brother John (ex Drums in Ignite), Chris Aiken (Strung Out) is playing bass. We’ve got Jason Freeze playing saxophone and Dan Kelly (Ten Foot Pole) is playing keyboard…

During the interview, Efrem also made clear his stance on file sharing, in contrast to some other bands:

I think everyone should steal music, I think everyone should download music. It doesn’t fucking matter -the industry is designed to destroy bands… it’s just leveling the playing field. Without the internet, I wouldn’t have been able to meet as many wonderful friends all over the world.

You can check out the interview or r a sneek peek at an unreleased song; “Sing For You” off of their upcoming album Video 1 (New Song) Video 2 (Band Announcent) Death By Stereo released Death For Life on Epitaph in 2005.

Yellowcard discusses USO shows

Yellowcard has posted a blog entry about their recent trip to the middle east for a series of performances for troops stationed in the Persian Gulf. They said:

It was 19 hours of flying each way and we just got back today. While we were there we had been scheduled to play in Kuwait the first day and then head north into Iraq for the rest of the trip. At the last minute the President came in after his visit to Israel which made it impossible to get a flight north. All of the resources there were being used for security. So we made some changes and ended up playing the bases in and around Kuwait instead.

Even though we didn’t get to be in Iraq and fire machine guns out of the sides of helicopters and drive tanks(which were just a couple of the things we were hoping to do), it was still an amazing trip for the three of us. We played the shows acoustic which gave us the chance to really hang out with the troops during the show. We really felt like we were bringing a piece of home to them and could tell how grateful they were to spend some time away from their normal routine.

We have never held our tongues when it came to our feelings about the war in Iraq, however we have always said that although we may not support the entire mission, we will always support the men and women who are there. We would like to thank everyone there that came to the shows and especially those that took care of us while we were there. It was something we will remember for as long as we live. We wish only for everyone there to return home safe.

Some photos from the trip can be seen in this story.

Jay Reatard signs to Matador, plans single series and Black Keys support

Jay Reatard, the garage punk behind notable acts like Lost Sounds and The Reatards, has signed to Matador Records according to Pitchfork.

For his debut, Jay will be releasing six singles in 2008. The label is aiming for a March debut, but will be releasing each successive single on an increasingly limited basis. That is, they will be pressing many more of the first single than the last one of the set. However, before you camp out in front of eBay, the label will eventually be compiling the singles into a proper CD.

Reatard has also been tapped to provide support for The Black Keys

Rancid recording with Brett Gurewitz

RancidRancid has entered the studio with producer Brett Gurewitz to begin work on their seventh studio album.

The album is the first from the band since 2003’s Indestructible. While it has been a few years since the band’s last record as a group, the individual members have been quite busy. Tim Armstrong released A Poet’s Life, Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards delivered Viking and bassist Matt Freeman hit the road with Social Distortion. The album also marks the recorded debut of drummer Brandon Steineckert who took over drum duties from Brett Reed last year

Update on the upcoming Rise Against record

Rise Against have posted a status update on their follow-up to 2006’s highly acclaimed The Sufferer & the Witness:

Presently we are writing and demo-ing for what will become our next record. Don’t expect it too soon, we’re just getting started early. We will bring the details as they come, we just wanted to check in and say thanks to everyone for another awesome year.”

The new record is expected to surface this summer/fall and will also be their first with current guitarist Zach Blair, who replaced former member Chris Chasee earlier last year during The Sufferer and the Witness tour.

Prior to the new record, Rise Against will be releasing a new digital EP compiling five rare tracks. The EP is titled This Is Noise and is due out January 15, 2008. It includes three cover versions and two original tracks.

Jawbreaker’s ‘Unfun’ to see remastered reissue

UnfunJawbreaker drummer Adam Pfahler has unveiled plans for an eventual reissue of the band’s first full-length, Unfun.

The news came via a MySpace bulletin where Pfahler mentions that he will hit the studio in February with Jon Golden to remaster the album. No additional details were announced, though he did say “it’ll be available on itunes [sic] and all the other usual suspects.” The album will presumably be released via Pfahler’s Blackball label, which has issued a number of post-breakup releases from the band, including 1999’s Live 4/30/96, 2002’s collections disc Etc. and 2004’s Dear You reissue.

Unfun was originally released in 1990 via Shredder Records.

Pfahler also gave some additional information on the “reunion” of sorts that took place last year:

a few “new items” i read mentioned the doc and us playing together. it was a reunion of sorts – we hadn’t seen billy a since our last sf show in 1996. but i doubt i’ll put up any songs from that recent session. the best one is way too long a file to upload, and anyway, i didn’t even ask the boys if they had an opinion – bad.

H2O signs to Bridge 9

H2OLong-running New York hardcore act H2O has signed to Bridge Nine Records.

The band is currently in the studio with New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert and engineer Paul Miner (Death by Stereo) working on their fifth full-length and first since 2001’s GO, set for a tentative release in May 2008. The as yet untitled album will derive completely from this one new session, although the band has been in and out of the studio for quite some time.

GO, as well as 2002’s holdover EP All We Want, were the band’s sole efforts for now-defunct major MCA Records. The return to an independent marks the band’s first since 1999’s F.T.T.W. for Epitaph.
