Shook Ones updates: split with End of a Year, European tour
Newly label-free Shook Ones have updated us with some of their plans for the coming months of 2008.
The band will hit the recording studio the first weekend of April to lay down a few tracks for a split 7″ with another group of fresh free agents, End of a Year. Shooks’ sessions will be handled by Jackson Long, who recorded the band’s half of last year’s split with Easel. They’re aiming for a late spring release on Malvern, PA’s Runner Up Records.
Additionally, the band will write and “hopefully” record their next full-length this approaching summer. No label has yet been announced, with guitarist Kelly Aiken telling Punknews.org it’ll “probably” be self-released via his own label, Modern Alchemy. That label recently handled the vinyl release of the aforementioned Easel split.
That same summer, more specifically August, will also see the band head back to Europe with some familiar touring partners.
Shook Ones’ latest proper full-length was 2006’s Revelation-released Facetious Folly Feat.

The Shins’ Marty Crandall’s domestic violence case dismissed
According to a Pitchfork report, the charges against The Shins‘ Marty Crandall and his ex-girlfriend Elyse Sewell have been dismissed due to lack of evidence.
The news broke over the weekend after Elyse posted a shocking description of an alleged incident of domestic assault Elyse also commented on the dismissal:
The D.A. has rejected the case against me. I am free. I wish the same outcome for Marty and have no intention of pursuing any further legal action. I would not wish entanglement in the widening gyre of the American legal system upon my worst enemy.

Valve and NVIDIA Offer Portal: First Slice Free to GeForce Users
The most recent Steam Hardware Survey shows more Steam gamers play on NVIDIA GeForce hardware than any other graphics platform. In an effort to further support this popular PC gaming configuration – Steam games plus NVIDIA hardware – Valve and NVIDIA have entered into an agreement to collaborate on development, distribution, events, and more.
Effective immediately, all NVIDIA gamers may receive a free copy of PortalTM: First Slice, a special version of the award-winning new game from Valve, by visiting www.steamgames.com/nvidia1 and “Taking the Test.” Steam will then auto-detect the presence of NVIDIA hardware and make Portal: First Slice available immediately, free of charge. To make it easy for all NVIDIA customers to redeem this offer, a link to the Steam offer will also be included in all NVIDIA drivers.
“More Steam gamers, including myself, play on NVIDIA hardware than any other GPU,” said Doug Lombardi, vice president of marketing at Valve. “That’s a testament to the company’s long history of innovation and quality. By working together with NVIDIA to expand our development, distribution, and marketing efforts, we’re increasing our ability to serve the millions of NVIDIA customers logging onto Steam and help us prepare for our next generation of content.”
Throughout the coming year, the companies will also be working together to support competitive gaming events for Counter-Strike® and Team Fortress® 2 and will continue to work together to define and support the breakthrough features of tomorrow’s games and graphics hardware.
“Valve’s endorsement of our technology and tools is yet another example of how the world’s leading gaming companies are working with NVIDIA,” said Roy Taylor, vice president of content relations at NVIDIA. “Portal is the hottest new, award-winning title from Valve, and we’re delighted that Valve will offer First Slice exclusively to GeForce customers.”
Portal: First Slice is now available to all NVIDIA customers. For more information about the offer or to take the test, please click here.

Ryan’s Hope look forward to new album
Ryan’s Hope has announced plans to start work on a new full length and their follow up to 2006’s Punknews Records released Apocalypse in Increments. The band will again join forces with Dan Precision (ex-88 Fingers Louie, Rise Against, Break The Silence) at the Bombshelter Studio to record. The band announced:
…before we can even think of recording, we’re going to be writing non-stop and saving money in the coming months to fund the album’s production ourselves. We have no idea when we hope to record or how we’re going to release it, (definitely this year) but updates will be frequent as we continue preparing new music together. We have 3 or 4 new songs already, but are still adjusting them and will continue broadening our catalogue in the coming months.
This album is going to be made for our own satisfaction. We are excited to get in a creative mindset again and refresh ryan’s hope as a band. The emphasis of our band has always been enjoying each others company and making the best music we can together. Nothing more. We still have a lot to say, and look forward to sharing our next effort with everyone.
This also marks the band’s departure from Punknews Records, the label run by a trio of current and former Punknews.org editors. I’ll go ahead and quote myself here, which I can assure you is a strange thing to do:
When we launched PNR we had a very romanticized picture of the traditional indie label, but we unfortunately started down that road just before the industry plunged into its current state of uncertainty. When it came time to discuss the follow up to Apocalypse it became clear that the old way of doing things wasn’t going to cut it anymore. It would have been neither prudent nor progressive for either us or the band. We’re thrilled that Terry, Nick and Greg are taking their future into their own hands and wish them all the best in striking out on their own. We’re immensely proud of Apocalypse In Increments, remain huge fans of Ryan’s Hope, and look forward to an exciting period of renewal for both them and us.
