Deathwish/Malfunction acquires Perfect Victim Records

Deathwish Inc. has announced that they have acquired the back catalogue and unreleased albums from the now defunct Perfect Victim Recordings. The label states

Our old pal Mike from Stab & Kill/Perfect Victim, decided to cease operations of the label some time ago. Since then, some killer releases from Slumlords (members of Breakdown, Pulling Teeth), Forward To Death, S.O.S., and Blue Monday have been hiding on shelves and in boxes.

Well, we are here to fix that. Deathwish has officially acquired the Perfect Victim Records existing catalog. Deathwish now carries all of these titles exclusively in the DW Estore. You can also find Perfect Victim titles in retail stores through our friends at Revelation Distribution.

So yeah, Deathwish, Malfunction, and Perfect Victim are now one label family.

“The Silence After” documents last days of CBGB

UN:ART:IG, the videographer who recently brought you footage of Hot Water Music‘s reunion performance in Sayreville, NJ has a feature online looking at the last days of CBGB’s in New York. You can find all eight parts of “The Silence After” on YouTube or check out the first clip in the series, featuring Bad Brains and Avail, by clicking below. The filmmaker had this to say about the project:

Before CBGB’s doors finally closed for good on October 15th 2006 a number of farewell shows graced the legendary club for a very last time. Dinosaurs mankind had believed to be extinct found their way back home from Jurassic Punk, onto a stage they hadn’t set foot on in ages. Some of these performances were sensational, others outrageously pathetic and insulting. No matter what category one might file them under, they all had one thing in common. A sold out madhouse atmosphere with a distinct vibe of nostalgia and last supper feasting. Talk about a good time… “THE SILENCE AFTER” presents the highs and lows of these unforgettable moments.

You can find more on the film here.

MP3 of the Week: Kate Nash / Social Circkle

Brian: The Editors’ Picks are a rare feature these days, so I’m bending the rules a bit and recommending two very different acts for you this weekend.

The first is Kate Nash, a 20-year-old English songstress who released the rather excellent Made of Bricks through Fiction/Polydor last year. Meg piqued my interest about her this past week with a Lily Allen comparison, and it’s totally grounded (just listen to “Pumpkin Soup”). There’s definitely a bit of Regina Spektor on the album as well though, where Nash expresses often bitter narratives through a multitude of arrangements involving piano, acoustics, horns and more. One particular track, “Mariella,” exudes a bit of a Dresden Dolls quality too. Anyway, check out her MySpace page for a few songs.

The second is Social Circkle, a band who writes lightning-fast, excellent early `80s-styled hardcore, much like their celebrated contemporaries Career Suicide. Just listen to “Canned Response” and tell me that’s not the best thing you’ve heard in months. It’s from their new 7″, I’ve Got Afflictions, set to drop this coming Tuesday via No Way Records. (If you’re aching for more, check out an MP3 from their 2007 7″, Static Eyes, or download their 8-song demo for free.)
