Near riot during Pennywise performance in Long Beach (Updated with footage)

Pennywise‘s recent performance following the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach escalated into a near riot after police barred hundreds of people from entering the concert that had reached capacity Saturday night on the lawn of the Long Beach Performing Arts Center.

Officer Jackie Bezart, spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department, said the incident went beyond people just trying to enter the concert.”The crowd got somewhat unruly and bottles were thrown at officers,” Bezart said. “At that point we deployed additional officers to maintain crowd control.”

Five people with minor injuries from the concert or possibly from the altercation outside the venue were transported to area hospitals, Duree said. Bezart said she didn’t have any reports of police officers being injured. However, a Long Beach resident who was turned away disagreed:

They (police) were hitting people with clubs, and you couldn’t back up fast enough. I saw this man get Tased, 40- or 50-year-old man, just get Tased. His eyes were stone cold.

By the time the concert ended about 7:30 p.m., 50 police officers wearing riot helmets and carrying Police in riot gear block the area around the Long Beach Performing Arts Center after crowds trying to enter the Pennywise concert became unruly. (Daniel deBoom/For the Press-Telegram) batons had formed a circle blocking the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and Ocean Boulevard, preventing anyone else from entering the performance.

More details including some video footage can be found here.

The band has yet to make a statement about the incident.

Weezer promises “Blue” and “Pinkerton” influences

As Weezer gears up for the release of their third self-titled album on June 24, 2008, the label has revealed some information about the sound of the record as well as the track listing and versions of the album that will be released:

Comprised of sessions produced by Rick Rubin, Jacknife Lee and the band itself, the album is adventurous and undeniable Weezer.

Great albums are culminations of the past with an eye to the future, and the Red Album has parts “Blue Album,” “Pinkerton,” and forges new territory with all four members taking turns singing lead.

The normal version of the album will feature ten tracks, with a special “deluxe” edition featuring an additional four songs.

The Replacements consider reunion performances

With their new reissues streeting on April 22, 2008, The Replacements are apparently considering a reunion performance. The band spoke to Billboard saying:

We actually talked about it again this year, and I think there was a consensus that, you know, maybe it wasn’t the right time (to reunite), or maybe it is the right time, Paul and I were kind of in cahoots talking to them [and] talking to (his manager) Darren (Hill). There were some things thrown out, and there were other festivals that wanted it too, if we were going to do it.

Frontman Paul Westerberg adds:

‘m very hesitant about dragging the name out there and what damage we could do to the legend. Whatever we did, someone would want something else. If I went up there straight, they’d want us wasted. If we were fucked up, they’d want us to be this or that.

So if I was ever going to play, I’d like to play once the whole shooting match is out, because I don’t think I could physically get up there and bellow these 18 songs (from) that first record. That’s just sheer youth there. I can’t find that in a bottle or a pill. I’m just too creaky for that.

The group has received lucrative offers to perform at Coachella and other major festivals, and that he and Westerberg were close to accepting this year. The group would have been rounded out by session drummer Josh Freese (replacing original drummer Chris Mars, who has retired from music to focus on painting), and an unnamed lead guitarist (replacing Stinson’s late half-brother Bob, who died in 1995).
