“Inside Straight Edge” documentary

Last night, the National Geographic Channel will be airing a documentary titled Inside Straight Edge. The film documents the 90s straight edge scene, showing different sides of the controversial movement. The film was narrated by Sonic Youth‘s Thurston Moore and will be re-airing on Sunday, April 13th, at 4pm. The channel notes:

Youth can be a minefield: drugs, sex, violence, and peer pressure. One group has an extreme way of dealing with it. They call themselves Straight Edge, and while they are being classified as a violent gang in areas such as Salt Lake City and Reno, they aren’t like any other gang you know: they reject drugs, drinking, smoking, and even casual sex. They’re rebels against a society in which everything goes. National Geographic goes inside this growing youth movement caught between being a refuge for Americas kids and a dangerous gang wanted by authorities.

There is also an article about the feature here.

The documentary also examines the formation of the controversial and still infamous gang, FSU. You can find a clip of that part here.

Plus 44 (ex-Blink 182) set to record new album

Plus 44 After considerable silence and some uncertainty regarding the band’s future, Plus 44 has revealed that work has been progressing towards their next album and follow up to 2006’s When Your Heart Stops Beating. Frontman Mark Hoppus explained:

For everyone like me who has been wondering what’s going on with the +44’s, here’s the deal. This whole time we’ve been continuing to write and demo ideas on our own. The only thing is we’ve been waiting for the label to fund the recording, and this just came through. I understand everyone wondering what’s the deal, and believe me a lot has happened that I haven’t posted the minutia of.

Do you like how I ended that last sentence in a preposition? In any case, all is good. We’re just guys writing songs. But we’re gonna flip it this time around. Now just for fun I’m going to really confuse the issue and go back to saying we’re recording an electronic album with me, Travis, and Carol. And we’re recording the album in Brazil.

But truthfully, thanks for the support and interest and know that we’re here working as always, and as always we’re creative people with a lot of ideas and energies. But nothing is closer to our hearts than recording our own music.
