Big Drill Car plan two Warped dates

Recently reactivated 80s and 90s-era pop-punk outfit Big Drill Car have decided to follow up their August 13th show with two Warped Tour shows on the West Coast.

The shows will feature the band’s original 1987-1992 lineup and will be appeared at the August 14th and August 17th Warped dates. They will be playing the “Old School” stage at those shows.

Big Drill Car released an EP, Small Block, in 1988 before being signed to Cruz Records (owned by former Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn) and releasing two studio albums. The band eventually parted ways with that label and signed to Headhunter Records, who released No Worse for the Wear, the band’s final album. Big Drill Car broke up in 1995

Be Your Own Pet drops off Warped

After sharing some harsh words about the long-running tour, Be Your Own Pet have announced that they will not be performing on Warped this summer:

We regret to inform our fans that we will not be participating in this year’s Warped Tour. We have been going non-stop for the past 6 months and didn’t realize how much the intense schedule would take out of us. Something had to give and sadly its this tour.

The band had said the following about Warped:

I just associate it with a certain look and a certain style and the kind of kids at school that I thought were– this is really bad, I’m sure– the kind of kids that were dumbasses wearing Rancid t-shirts who thought they knew what punk rock was and threw things at people in the cafeteria.

So it’s like, okay, now we’re going to be performing for these people. Our label is under the impression that we’re going to play one date and then automatically sell 100,000 more records. All those bands have this very specific look and sound and style. It’s like the new hair metal or something. There are like 10 different rules about how you write a song and what everything sounds like and looks like.

They have been touring in support of their sophomore full length, Get Awkward

Artist to exhibit dancing robots with a taste for punk

Boing Boing recently spotlighted an exercise in art and robotics with a punk twist dubbed “Neurotic”. Artist Fiddian Warman has built a set of robots controlled by a neural network, an adaptive programming modeled on real biology with the ability to learn. The robots, which have the ability to pogo, have been trained on classic punk records.

Warman’s site explains:

“Neurotic questions how taste and learning develops through these empathetic responses of the brain. The robots, pre-conditioned by Fiddian to the “classic punk” he loved in his youth, will develop their own neural connectivity through ‘listening’ and express their pleasure or displeasure to the new, live music through the pogoing action. It constitutes a live performance hinging on the tension between a punk band, ‘Neurotic’, and its audience of pogo-ing humans and three 2 meter tall robots whose cognition is modelled on brain function. This exploration makes special reference to maturation of synaptic connectivity and notions of learning around empathetic experience with mirror neurons.”

The systems will be put on display in an exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London from July 3rd to 5th. The artist has formed a punk band for the occasion dubbed Neurotic and the PVCs featuring guitarist Andrew Tweedie (Menace), drummer Chris Bashford (Chelsea) and bassist Rob Bartram (Chester). The band, along with a pair of openers, will play for an audience of superior dancing robots and filthy human meatsacks on each day of the exhibit.
