Design house suggests Cute Is What We Aim For plagiarized art

Design house Alphabet Arms has posted some images suggesting that popular FBR act Cute Is What We Aim For used one of their designs for their new album cover.

According to the designers:

At the beginning of last year, Cute Is What We Aim For’s management contacted us about doing some merch designs for the band. They informed us the band liked our work, namely a design we did for Counting Crows back in 2004 or 2005 (That design has since been published in a few books, namely Logo Lounge 3 + Letterhead and Logo Design 9 from Rockport Press).

After some back and forth over pricing we were informed they were going to concentrate on the merch design in-house and contact us later. We never heard anything back.

The band posted images comparing the album cover to their design work on youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com. You can compare for yourself here.

The Shins plan to self-release next album

Though the band has had a lengthy and successful relationship with Sub Pop Records, the Shins are apparently looking to go solo for their next album. According to a Billboard interview, the band is set toself-release their fourth studio album through frontman James Mercer’s Aural Apothecary label.

The band is planning to continue the trend of popular bands testing new waters by partnering with a label for pressing and distribution but retaining ownership and control of their own recordings. While they have not ruled out Sub Pop, the band has not committed to the venerable indie either.

The band released Wincing the Night Away in 2007.
