Jimmy Eat World to begin recording

Though their last album was released late last fall, Jimmy Eat World is apparently beginning work on the follow up to Chase This Light. The band discussed their plans in a new interview:

We’re kind of feeling like we have a lot of ideas brewed up and we’re going to get cracking on some new music. Actually we have our own home studio that we recorded ‘Chase this Light’ in. So it’s really convenient, So far, we’re having the attitude of just doing it. And not having the attitude of trying to do anything, and just ‘Let It Happen’. With our other records, sometimes Jim will have a lyric melody or a guitar melody and we’ll build from that. Sometimes we just sit around and make noise and go from there.

“We’re trying our best to break that and cut the time [between albums] down – and at least cut a year off of that. That’s our goal. We want to be able to have stuff out there sooner.

According to the interview, the band is also considering self-releasing a future album. After their next album, they will be free of their current contract with their label.

Former Escape the Fate singer caught by police

In a follow up to our recent story, former Escape The Fate singer Ronnie Radke has been caught by police after skipping out on parole and hiding out.

According to a Buzznet report, Radke was arrested yesterday, with Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Picou saying that police “caught him by surprise” at a residence in Henderson, about 15 miles outside of Las Vegas. .

Picou said that he was not aware of any additional charges Radke might be facing, but he confirmed that the singer was indeed soliciting people for money to “allegedly reform his band,” as had been previously reported. The former Epitaph-signed singer was involved in a fight that led to the death of Michael Cook. While another man was charged with the murder, Radke was charged and convicted of battery for his involvement in the situation.

Canadian musicians unite against new copyright bill

The recently unveiled copyright law in Canada that aims to provide a US-style DMCA has recieved significant criticism from one of the groups it claims to protect. Canadian musicians, through their music creators coalition have some harsh words for the law which could criminalize everything from sampling to moving media from CD to an iPod if passed.

Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene made this statement through the group:

The question is, who gains from this bill? It’s not musicians. Musicians don’t need lawsuits, we don’t need DRM protection. These aren’t the things that help us or our careers. What we do need is a government that is willing to sit down with all the stakeholders and craft a balanced copyright policy for Canada that will not repeat the mistakes made in the United States.”

The Canadian musician group includes Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, Billy Talent, Stars, The Weakerthans, Sloan and many others. Along with criticism of the bill itself, the group notes that the entire bill was produced without any involvement from Canadian stakeholders, instead focusing on requests from American lobbyists and groups like the MPAA.

One particularly controversial section is the anti-circumvention clause that will make it illegal to break digital locks on copyrighted material. The controversy arises from the fact that this anti-circumvention clause will override existing rights, so the “fair dealing” right to backup, copy, cite and analyze commercial works will be restricted at the whim of copyright holders. Moreover, mashups and satire will be criminalized by the bill if they “distort or mutilate a copyright performance.”

Along with musicians, citizens are critical of the bill and law professor Michael Geist has compiled some citizen complaints here.

Slayer’s Kerry King provides album updates

Kerry King of Slayer provided Total Guitar/Metal Hammer writer Joel McIver an update on the status of the band’s next album and future plans:

There’s been talk of all kinds of odd things, because the record industry changes every day. We’ve talked about maybe putting out a couple of songs from an upcoming record through iTunes, so we can play something new on the Unholy Alliance III tour. You know, that’s not so far outside the realm of possibility. As far as how much we’re gonna get done by the end of the year? I have no idea.

The new album will follow 2006’s Christ Illusion. It is expected in late 2008/early 2009 and may possibly be the band’s last record as singer and bassist Tom Araya has said he’s reaching an age where it might no longer be reasonable to tour or record.
