The Onion AV Club has obtained some photographs of the upcoming Joy Division-themed The Zune to be released by Microsoft.

As expected the Zune features an adaptation of the cover art from the band’s 1979 debut, Unknown Pleasures, which artist Peter Saville created using a graph of one hundred pulses from pulsar CP 1919 (apparently the first radio pulsar ever discovered).

The branded MP3 player coincides with the release of the band’s new documentary, Joy Divison which is due out June 17, 2008 via The Miriam Collection.

Michelle Nolan takes hiatus from Straylight Run

Michelle Nolan, the female co-singer of Straylight Run has taken a hiatus from the band to work on her solo project. She explained:

I wanted to let you know that after a lot of thought and discussion with the band, i have decided that i am going to take some time off from Straylight Run to work on a solo record. It was a difficult decision to make and please know that i have enjoyed all my time in Straylight Run and i loved meeting all of you through the years and hope to continue to see you in the future! John, Will, Shaun and i are all still close friends and we look forward to playing together again some day. Straylight Run is not breaking up.

The guys will be continuing on without me and this month they are recording some new songs for you all! In the mean time i will be working on my new project and i will keep you informed as things start to come together. Thank you so much for your support and your understanding.

The band released The Needles The Space last year.

Recess Records launches Recess Japan

Established punk label Recess Records has announced the formation of Recess Japan. From the label’s website:

I am excited as all hell to announce the fetal beginnings of Recess Japan! The whole idea was to offer downloads only of the many great bands that we have crossed paths with while touring Japan. But the label , Underground Government , ended up putting The Underground Railroad to Candyland – Bird Roughs CD/DVD out in Japan with the Recess Japan logo on it. So we might as well try to get some physical media out too here & there. Still, the focus remains on downloads…

The label is currently working on the re-issue of Screaching Weasel‘s Boogada Boogada Boogada.
