Easton, Pennsylvania based indie rock act Settle have signed with Epitaph Records. The band is currently in the studio recording with Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tango).
The band was formed in Seattle in 2006 by brothers Nick (vocals, guitar) and Willie Rose (drums). The band’s current line up also features guitarist Dave Goletz and bassist Chris Burcin. To date the group has over 100 songs to their name and have self-released a pair of EPs. In `06 the band won an MTV-sponsored “Best Music on Campus” competition which awarded them a chance to play the network’s annual Spring Break shindig in Cancun, Mexico. Epitaph head Mr. Brett commented in the label’s press release “Settle has everything I admire in a great band: poetry, tunefulness, originality and vision, all pursued recklessly, as if the whole thing might fall apart at any second and you can dance to it.”
The band will release their debut full length on Epitaph in early 2009.

These Arms Are Snakes have posted an update about their long-awaited collaboration with Chicago post-rock/metal/hardcore kingpins Pelican:
It looks like this long-rumored project is finally going to see the light of day. Our split/collaboration with Pelican is off to the pressing plant and should be all packaged up in time for our West Coast tour with sBACH in September.
For those not hip to the news, we teamed up with Pelican for their encore at Islington Academy in London back in the spring of 2007. Nine dudes on stage played through Pelican’s Pink Mammoth. We decided to recreate that moment by releasing a version of the song with contributions from both bands.
But the trade off was forcing Pelican to contribute their embellishments to our song Diggers Of Ditches Everywhere. I must say: those nerdy post-rockers really know how to make a song so layered and textured that you can get completely lost in the expansiveness of the sound. They definitely transformed it into something totally new.
Also of note is that their label is planning to release CD versions of the collaboration as well. Original plans called for only a limited 10-inch version, but CDs will be made in a “limited, small batch.”
TAAS will be releasing their new full length, Tail Swallower & Dove on October 07, 2008.

Over the past three years I have had an unbelievable time playing with Cobra Skulls but unfortunately it has come to an end. I have decided to pursue other interests in life and will no longer be rocking with the Cobras.
I would like to thank all the people who supported us, came to our shows, let us stay at their house, bands we played with and everyone else who made this experience so much fun. I wish you guys the best of luck and know your next tour is going to be awesome. A special thanks to Toby for his support and belief in Cobra Skulls. I’ll miss all of you.
The band released Never Be a Machine [7 inch] this year.

Atlanta’s ambient / garage-punk act Deerhunter posted an update about the leak of their upcoming full length. The record is titled Microcastle and is due out October 28, 2008.
Vocalist Bradford Cox explained:
I have researched it and am not going to make excuses but the fact is that Mediafire has made several upgrades recently when I was taking a break from blogging. In all seriousness, I AM THE ONE WHO FUCKED UP by not realizing that without creating an account, Mediafire has been archiving my uploads “for my convienience” via my “browser chache (!?!)” and that as part of their new “convienient” features they offer automatic “folder sharing” which must be turned off. I don’t blame anyone for, and am not accusing anyone of STEALING things.
Please keep in mind that these records are made possible by our record labels, Kranky and 4AD. Microcastle was released today on iTunes. If you downloaded it in advance through the leak and you can afford it I urge you to support those labels and us by downloading it legally.
The rest of the blog posting is available here and you can “legalize” your copy here.

Greg Graffin, esteemed and tenured professor life sciences and vocalist for Bad Religion recently participated in a Los Angeles Times feature that looked at the dynamic of musicians who also juggle other careers.
Graffin noted:
I had big questions about where we come from. The things that religion usually satisfies, I was learning from science. The band had started two years before that, and it was really a good synergy because we were talking about Bad Religion, and it’s implicit in evolution that there are no gods
I actually think it’s made us a far more interesting band. And I think it’s possible that if I hadn’t maintained my academic pursuits, the band would have burned out earlier. But in terms of satisfaction, there’s no difference to me between lecturing and performing. It’s all entertainment. You’re just trying to inspire people.
