Tenth annual Power to the Peaceful celebration set for September 6th in San Francisco
Michael Franti, of Spearhead, Beatnigs and the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprasy, has announced the 10th annual Power to the Peaceful celebration in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The free festival will take place on September 6th this year. The celebration began in 1998 with 6,000 attendees while last year’s drew an estimated 60,000. Past performers have included Indigo Girls, The String Cheese Incident, John Butler Trio, KRS-1, Digital Underground, Woody Harrelson, Angela Davis, Saul Williams, Dennis Kucinich, Ram Das, Blackalicious, Alice Walker, Talib Kweli, The Coup, Keller Williams, DJ Spooky, Lyrics Born, graffiti artist Vulcan, Youth Speaks Poets, Julia Butterfly Hill, and many more. In 2007 the event went international with celebrations in South America and Africa.
The year will feature musicians Michael Franti and Spearhead, Ziggy Marley, Warren Haynes, King Britt, Cheb i Sabbah, and a variety of renowned DJ’s and other international acts. During the day various speakers including Namkha Rinpoche Lama, will address various issues of social justice and equality on the main festival stage and participate in the Amnesty International Sponsored Social Forum Speaker Tent. The Mezzanine in San Francisco will host the Festival afterparty featuring an Allstar Jam Session and DJ dance party.
Sunday, September 7 will offer a day of yoga at Yoga Tree Castro, hosted by Power to the Peaceful Yoga. Again this year, Conscious Alliance will host a Food Drive. PTTP attendees are encouraged to bring ten non-perishable food items to redeem for an exclusive PTTP Food Drive Poster. All donations will go to benefit the San Francisco Food Bank.

The Clash to release “Live at Shea Stadium” in October
Sony has announced plans to release The Clash‘s legendary Shea Stadium performance on CD this October. Recorded at Shea on October 13, 1982, the set will include the band’s entire performance as they opened for The Who on their “farewell” tour.
The tour came shortly after the release of the band’s massive 1982 full length, Combat Rock.

Ben Folds: “Way to Normal”
Ben Folds has released the first video from his upcoming solo album. The record is titled Way to Normal and is due out September 30, 2008. It is the follow-up to Supersunnyspeedgraphic: The LP which was released in 2006.
The video features some stop motion animation that would make fans of this show proud.

Rochester, New York’s Sakes Alive!! are gearing up for the launch of their new 7″ on Barrett Records. The Act I 7″ will feature the tracks “I’m Religious,” “Staff Meeting” and “Relax,” with 100 copies pressed on transparent green vinyl and 400 on mixed colour marble. The Syracuse based label has a preorder started for the record, with MP3s included. Look for it in stores on August 18th.
To celebrate the new release the band is giving prize packs featuring extremely rare test pressings of the new record.

Rage Against the Machine plan show to coincide with Republican National Convention
Political rock act Rage Against the Machine have booked a show at the Target Center in Minneapolis on September 3, which, incidentally, is the same week as the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.
According to this report, Rage guitarist Tom Morello has already committed to perform with country-rocker Steve Earle at a union rally September 1st at St. Paul’s Harriet Island, the first day of the convention. The band has made no secret of their issues with the Republican party and has made made unsubtle political jabs at the current administration.
Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. for $60.

The Stooges robbed in Montreal
The legendary Stooges were robbed while staying in Montreal, QC on their current tour. The band’s equipment was in a rented Penske truck parked outside the Embassy Suites Hotel.
The thieves grabbed the band’s gear including guitars, drums, cabinets and more and are hoping someone saw something or had any information leading to the recovery of the equipment. You can find more details here and get in touch with the band via that page.
The band has been touring in support of The Weirdness, their first proper release in almost 34 years.

Silverstein set to record this fall
Burlington, ON’s own Silverstein will be recording this fall. The band explained:
Summer has been going by quickly for us between playing festivals and writing our next album. We’re very excited about all of the new material so far and can’t wait to record later this fall. A new album should be out some time early next year. We’ll be hitting the road a bit this fall and will have more details regarding that soon. In the meantime, we’re gearing up for an extensive Japanese tour in September (very exciting!). We also just confirmed the 3rd Annual BroFest concert in our hometown for October 3rd.
Along with releasing a slew of successful albums, one member of the band boasts one of the biggest Hot Water Music vinyl collections you’re likely to find.
