John K. Samson participates in Winnipeg recording project

Weakerthans frontman John K. Samson recently participated in Record Of The Week Club. As the project’s website explains:

The Record Of The Week Club is a weekly recording session featuring musicians from diverse musical backgrounds. Never knowing who their co-creators will be – an incognito and disparate group of musicians meet at MCM Studios in Winnipeg, Canada every Wednesday evening. Over the course of one evening they are charged with the task of getting to know each other, arranging, rehearsing and recording a piece under the guidance of Mike Petkau. The song is immediately mixed and uploaded and made available for download that same night.

Jazz drummers are being paired with punk guitarists and opera singers; classical violinists are being paired with taiko drummers and DJ’s, folksingers are being paired with sound collage artists and trombonists. The combinations are endless. And to top it off, we’ve invited local filmmakers to document the process.

Samson was paired with Inuit throat singer Nikki Komaksiutiksak, and Curtis Walker of electronic act Blunderspublik to write, record and mix a song in one evening. The results are titled “Keewatin Arctic” and you can stream or purchase the song at RecordOfTheWeekClub.com.

Jello Biafra, Ike Reilly appearing with Ralph Nader at “Super Rallies”

NOFX and Rage Against the Machine might be playing beside various political conventions this year, but songwriter Ike Reilly and troublemaker Jello Biafra are actually getting asked on stage. Well, kind of. This election cycle Ralph Nader is back with Matt Gonzalez (who unsuccessfully ran for mayor against Gavin Newsome in San Francisco) as his running mate and they’ll be holding “Super Rallies” outside the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. The purpose of these “Super Rallies” is to serve as “a call for opening the presidential debates.

Still performing beside the convention, I guess, but at least on stage with candidates will be Biafra, Reilly and other notables such as Nellie McKay, Val Kilmer, Tom Morello, and Cindy Sheehan. Details can be found at VoteNader.org.
