Poison The Well post update on next album

Poison The Well have posted an update as they continue to work on new material for their next full length.

So we’re about halfway done with writing the new record now. We just demoed our first 7 songs and figured it would be a good spot for everyone to check in and say hi. It doesn’t sound like any other PTW records, but it sounds like a great next step. I don’t know how to describe it… the closest comparison I have is saying it sounds like music made by a vampire crust punk wearing a cutoff jean jacket with spikes and a giant Crass patch on the back, headbanging to darkly romantic 50s music while on his way to the beach for a surf party.

The entire band individually weighed in and you can see what they each said on their myspace blog.

The band released Versions in 2007.

Tracks from Thursday / Envy: Split

Envy Temporary Residence has begun a pre-order for their highly anticipated split between Japan’s Envy and New Jersey’s Thursday. The label had this to add about the album:

Recorded in Spring 2008, both bands turn in some of their most inspired work yet. In addition, Thursday invited Anthony Molina of Mercury Rev to remix the dark instrumental “In Silence” into the pitch-black closing track, “Appeared And Was Gone,” providing the perfect transition into the massive dynamics of Envy. Beginning with the subtle electronics of the symphonic opener, “An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction,” Envy thrashes and burns through a trio of thoughtful face-melters.

The set is pessed on audiophile-quality 180 gram vinyl and featuring original artwork by acclaimed poster artist, Dan Grzeca and includes a copy of the entire LP on CD as well.

You can check out a preview of a song from each of the participants on their respective Punknews.org Profiles: Envy and Thursday.

You can pre-order the split directly from the label here and stay tuned for a special contest beginning in October held right here on Punknews.org.

The Serious Geniuses: “You Can Steal The Riffs, But You Can’t Steal the Talent”

The Serious Geniuses Time for another full album stream, this one comes from Boston, MA-based The Serious Geniuses. A recent review described the band thusly:

Mid-to-late 90’s power-post punk with a heavy nod in the direction of “Icky Mettle” era Archers of Loaf […] Pavement, Ben Lee and others set forth, with the good, crunchy bits of “Bivouac”-era Jawbreaker tossed in for good measure.

You can check out the album on their Punknews.org Profile.

Ted Leo releases “Rapid Response” to benefit those hurt/arrested during Republican Convention

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists have released a new EP titled Rapid Response. The release is a benefit to bring awareness and financial aid to the people “affected by the police brutality in Minnesota.” Many have argued that police overreacted to protestors during the recent Republican National Convention hosted in St.Paul.

All proceeds from this EP will go directly to Food Not Bombs Minneapolis, Democracy Now and the legal fees for those who have been arrested. Leo explained:

This isn’t meant to be some grand sweeping statement on our part – it’s just a way for us to contribute SOMETHING real to the lives of real human beings, and show our material support for those whose actions and thoughts we value in this ideological struggle.

The $4.00 EP features two originals: “Paranoia: Never Enough” and “Mourning in America” plus two cover tunes, I Got Your Number (originally by Cock Sparrer) and Nobody’s Driving (Amebix).

You can purchase the EP directly from the label here.

Lucero signs to Universal Republic

After two albums on their Warner-East/West distributed Liberty & Lament label, Lucero has signed to Universal/Republic. According to a Memphis Flyer report, the band has a a four-album deal with the major.

Guitarist Brian Venable discussed the signing, saying:

It’s got to be one of the most low-key, non-rock-star major-label signings ever. The majors are running on a big indie model now, so it’s not tons of money. A four-record deal really means one record with three options. If it doesn’t sell well, they’ll drop us. In that case, we’d probably just try to do things through our own label.

We’re hoping for that major-label push – the press, the ads in all the magazines, hopefully get on some soundtracks. We’ve been doing this for 10 years. I’ve got a baby on the way. Everyone was like: What the hell, let’s take a shot. It’s not like we’re going to break up.

The band recently entered Young Avenue Sound studios for a few days to record a batch of demos for the label. They experimented with horns for the first time and may work on a second batch of demos soon.
