Derek Grant (of Alkaline Trio) releases free solo album

Derek Grant, drummer of Alkaline Trio has released a free solo album under the name The Reaper. Grant explained the project:

As I moved throughout the years, boxes of these 4 track master tapes would get shifted from state to state until I finally got around to digitizing them. I transferred a few songs to Pro-Tools to see about remixing them – what I found was some dreadfully recorded instruments, and a whole lot of poorly played music. My first instinct was to just re-record the songs, perhaps change some lyrics, and re-arrange the songs a bit. But while I am hopefully a more accomplished musician than I was 18 years ago, there’s a spirit and energy to those songs that I could never recreate. It lives in the words and the vocals. So the decision was made to re-record the music around the vocal tracks.

I set about picking my favorite of the songs, digitizing all of the vocal tracks and EQ-ing them to sound half-way intelligible. I spent two days relearning and re-recording all of the guitar parts, then I took the recordings to Sonic Iguana Studios. There Mass Giorgini and Phillip Hill helped me to record the drums. In keeping with the original spirit, everything was recorded and mixed as quickly and haphazardly as possible.

You can download the album here.

MySpace Music launches

MySpace has launched its MySpace Music initiative. The service, which debuted last night, promises to allow users to stream virtually any song ever published for free. You can can also create playlists that contain up to 100 songs and share them with others. Any song can also be downloaded MP3 format via from Amazon’s music download service.

The entire system is ad-supported, with labels receiving a per-play licensing charge. At the same time, all the major labels – as well as indie distributor The Orchard, own part of the business. No other indies were given equity in the new company, according to reports.

The service has the potential to dramatically change music online, considering that entire label catalogues will now become free for streaming, on-demand and via playlists. It is interesting that the news comes just weeks after MuxTape was shut down by the major labels (through the RIAA) for offering a similar service.

Americans can try out the system here.

The Dillinger Four Leak drama wrap-up

There has been a surprising amount of drama regarding the recent leak of Dillinger Four‘s highly anticipated new album, Civil War. The record is due out October 14, 2008 and is the band’s first new record in 6 years.

One of the more surprising stories comes from Mitch Clem of Nothing Nice to Say fame who has been involved in a heated discussion with one of the album’s producers regarding the leak and his comic’s take on the event. The entire exchange is visible here.

At the same time, Punknews.org alumni and current Alternative Press love slave Scott Heisel posted his thoughts here. The alledged album leaker himself came clean here. Current Punknews.org editor, Jesse Raub elaborates on the entire brouhaha on his blog here.

Punknews.org does not support or condone leaking albums. It’s not just about the commerce; there are many people who work on an album like this one, it is fair for people to at least be compensated for the time they took away from other jobs, families and friends in order to put together an album for you. The record is just a few weeks away, so just hold on and it’ll be worth it.

If you’re excited about the record, take a moment and pre-order the album now.
