Foo Fighters criticize McCain for using “My Hero”

The Foo Fighters are the latest artists to criticize presidential hopeful John McCain for unauthorized use of one of their songs. The band issued the following statement:

This isn’t the first time the McCain campaign has used a song without making any attempt to get approval or permission from the artist. It’s frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that ‘My Hero’ was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song.

This is the latest in a string of angry artists who have seen their work used without permission. Others include rock group Heart, who were frustrated with the campaign’s use of “Barracuda,” songwriter Jackson Browne filed a lawsuit against their use of one of his songs, and Van Halen saw their song used to which they responded, tersely: “permission was not sought or granted nor would it have been given.”

The other presidential major candidate, Barack Obama, has instead seen artists not just provide support, but flock to arrange benefit performances for him; artists like Fall Out Boy, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi, the Grateful Dead, and many others.

Fans launch petition to bring punk back to satellite radio

A number of punk fan have launched an online petition in order to convince XM/Sirius Satellite radio that there is an audience for the radio provider’s former punk station, Fungus. The station has since been replaced with a 24-7 AC/DC station. While the all-AC/DC station is slated to expire in January, there is no word on what will replace it going forward. Sirius’ former punk page is directing listeners to their Extreme Sports station which will include punk, hip hop and metal.

Both stations provided a mixture of vintage and recent punk rock, with Sirius promising acts like “Sex Pistols, Ramones, Misfits, Black Flag, The Clash, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Suicidal Tendencies, Pennywise, Fugazi and many more” while Fungus 53 hosted shows DJ-ed by Rancid, Joe Sib’s Complete Control Radio and others. NOFX’s Fat Mike even weighed in on the station, noting: “I hate the radio but I like Fungus/The only punk rock station, it’s humongous.” in their song, “Fungus” which appeared on the April 2005 7-inch in their monthly series.

You can sign the petition here.

Dillinger Four chat with Chart

Dillinger Four recently spoke to Canada’s Chart Magazine to discuss how their long-awaited new album, Civil War came to be.

Guitarist/vocalist Erik Funk explained that the band wasn’t actually planning the new album:

We weren’t trying not to put out a record. It was just one thing after another and time flew by. When you don’t do your band like a career like us, you’ve got other things to do than worry about getting records made. If you don’t put a deadline on it, it may never get done. Like us, you turn around and it’s been six years.

When NOFX asked us if we wanted to go on the road with them, we thought it would be fun, but we thought it would be better if we had the record finished. We hadn’t planned on being done in October. It was for later in the year, so we had to kick it in high gear and get into the studio.

Most of [Civil War’s songs were written in] the last 12 months, so it’s a new record, not stuff we were sitting on and hadn’t recorded. It’s also not like we were writing these songs for the last six years.

The record is due out next week, on October 14, 2008. The band is currently kicking off a tour with NOFX and will be in Toronto tonight.

Pennywise not playing Liskfest

Pennywise have announced that they are no longer playing Southern Californian music festival Liskfest.

When Liskfest was back on we never reconfirmed, contrary to web spread rumors. We do apologize for any inconvenience and believe that Liskfest will be a great show, but we WILL NOT be on the bill that day.

The band is currently celebrating their 20th anniversary and supporting their 10th full length, the MySpace Records released Reason to Believe.

Liskfest takes place on October 11th in Irvine, CA and features bands like Gorilla Biscuits, the Vandals, Strung Out, Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die and others.
