River City Rebels are back with a new album. In Love/Loveless follows their 2007 effort, Keepsake of Luck. The band only printed 1,000 copies of the album and sold them only on their recent tour. Our own Zack Shapiro caught them on their Denver stop and talked with both Brandon Rainer (keyboards, harmonica, vocals) and Dan O’Day (vocals, guitar, bass).
Many, many of you wrote in with the news that Polar Bear Club have signed to Bridge 9 Records. The band made the following statement:
We couldn’t be happier about signing to Bridge Nine. We’ve been talking with labels for some time now, and as cliche as it sounds, there isn’t a better match out there for us. Polar Bear Club has always been fans of Bridge Nine as a label and the bands they’ve worked with. It’s rare these days to be a part of a label that doesn’t feel the need to rest on its laurels and is not afraid to push the envelope. We’ve been hard at work writing a new album for the past couple weeks and we can’t wait to share with the world what Polar Bear Club and Bridge Nine have to offer.
The band’s record from 2008, Sometimes Things Just Disappear, was named the seventh best album of 2008 by Punknews.org readers.

Over the past two days since the tragic death of founding Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, his bandmates have talked about the influential guitarist. The members of the Stooges made this statement:
We are shocked and shaken by the news of Ron’s death. He was a great friend, brother, musician, trooper. Irreplaceable. He will be missed. For all that knew him behind the façade of Mr Cool & Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not.
As a musician Ron was The Guitar God, idol to follow and inspire others. That is how he will be remembered by people who had a great pleasure to work with him, learn from him and share good and bad times with him.
Bassist Mike Watt (also of The Minutement) spoke to the LA Times about his time with Ron in the Stooges:
As a musician, he was a pioneer — very singular, very unique. To get to be onstage with him was incredible for me. We all looked up to Ronnie with that guitar sound. Man, it was a sound, but especially in those days in the early ’70s. Then the punk scene comes, and the Stooges was the common ground. That scene, which was not very popular here in Southern California, was just all these different weirdos from different places. The one thing in common was the Stooges. […] I loved being his bass player.
You can find the rest of Mike’s reminiscence here.
