The Decline State of the Music Business

Music veteran John Mellencamp has written a lengthy article on the Huffington Post talking about the state of the music industry and what may be in store. Of particular note:

Had the industry not been decimated by a lack of vision caused by corporate bean counters obsessed with the bottom line, musicians would have been able to stick with creating music rather than trying to market it as well.

Strung Out suffers minor injury, record still on track

Strung Out have posted an update on progress towards their next full length:

As for news on our new full length, we have finished up several weeks of pre-production for our new record but, not without incident! Jordan was beating the hell out of his drums during rehearsal when he struck the snare drum in some sort of wrong way and in a freak stroke of bad luck, broke the bone in the tip of his left thumb. X-rays the next day confirmed it was indeed cracked.

So, being that the plan was to start recording Monday, March 16th, and wanting to move forward without throwing things off schedule, we quickly came up with a game plan and got in touch with drummer Jarred Alexander (Throwdown, A Static Lullaby,DBS). He is helping out bigtime and now laying down all the drums as scratch tracks and doing a great job.

Then the guitars, bass, and vocals will be completed as usual. This will give Jordan proper time to heal up and he will re-record his drum tracks as the last process of the recording session.

The band is working with producer Cameron Webb (PW, Social D, Ignite, Motorhead. They released Blackhawks Over Los Angeles in 2007.

Nirvana catalogue to be reissued on vinyl

Nirvana will be releasing the entirety of their major label catalogue on vinyl, reports Billboard. Universal Records subsidiary, Original Recordings Group, has commissioned Bernie Grubman to remaster Nevermind, In Utero and MTV Unplugged in New York and all three will be made available on 180 gram vinyl.

ORG’s founder, Monti Olson commented on his vinyl plans:

We’re going to be releasing a lot of classic alternative music from the 80s and 90s on 180 gram vinyl. Stuff that’s more obscure and more popular. We’re in negotiation with quite a few of those artists. We have some new accounts that are experimenting with vinyl, like Best Buy. I don’t know how strong their initiative is, but they’ve alotted a little bit of floor space for vinyl.

But the bulk of the vinyl in the retail space goes through independent stores – the Amoebas and the Waterloos of the world that have always been in the vinyl business. But what’s happening is more and more people are coming in with a curiosity about buying record albums

Nirvana’s independent debut, Bleach, remains in print on vinyl through Sub Pop Records.
