Trent Reznor urges musicians to go independent

In a recent interview, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, the veteran musician commented a little on why he felt self-released music and independent releases were the best option for musicians:

Anyone who’s an executive at a record label does not understand what the internet is, how it works, how people use it, how fans and consumers interact – no idea. I’m surprised they know how to use email. They have built a business around selling plastic discs, and nobody wants plastic discs any more. They’re in such a state of denial it’s impossible for them to understand what’s happening.

One of the biggest wake-up calls of my career was when I saw a record contract. I said, ‘Wait – you sell it for $18.98 and I make 80 cents? And I have to pay you back the money you lent me to make it and then you own it? Who the f**k made that rule? Oh! The record labels made it because artists are dumb and they’ll sign anything’ – like I did.

While musicians like Reznor and Radiohead have been very successful with self-released and self-promoted albums, it remains to be seen if this model will work as well with less well-known artists.

Clash’s Mick Jones curates exhibition of his memorabilia

Legendary The Clash co-vocalist/co-songwriter Mick Jones has curated an exhibit at London’s Chelsea Space gallery. Jones opened his collection of vintage music memorabilia to the public.

He explained the project:

I started collecting things when I was very young and I did not really know why. Then at the millennium, the change of the century, it started to become clear. I realised I wanted to share it. I have kept everything, if it exists it’s probably there somewhere.

The exhibit includes Big Audio Dynamite lyric sheets, including stage clothes, plane tickets, access badges and a hastily scribbled note from the Clash’s late frontman, Joe Strummer. Early issues of magazines Creem and Rock Scene.

The exhibit runs at Chelsea Space until April 18th. The gallery has posted a number of photos from the exhibit here.

Bullet Treatment (Rise Against, Good Riddance, Strike Anywhere) announce new seven-inch

Bullet Treatment, the constantly changing supergroup formed by Chuck Dietrich has announced details for their forthcoming seven-inch. The record is titled Designated Vol. 1 and is due out April 14, 2009.

The good news about this release is I was asked to contribute a vocal track, and it was a honor to do so. For this 7″, every song will be exactly the same instrumentally, while each singer will write and perform their own individual vocal track without hearing any of the other recordings. The other singers on this record which reads like a who’s who of punk rock are Johnny from the Swingin’ Utters, Russ from Only Crime/ Good Riddance, Thomas of Strike Anywhere, Stza from Star Fucking Hipsters and Chris #2 of Anti-Flag.

You can find Tim’s track here.

Man Man: “Rabbit Habits (with Fred Armisen, Brett Gurewitz, others)”

Man Man has posted an elaborate short film/horror movie/music video for their song, “Rabbit Habbits.” To that end, the band collaborated with Fred Armisen from Saturday Night Live, Martin Starr from Superbad and Charlyne Yi from Knocked Up. There are also cameos from Anti label head Brett Gurewitz and a famed ice cream man.

The director explained the concept:

I met the band backstage at their LA show and we decided that we wanted to make a video for the song. harlyne was friends with Ryan (aka Honus Honus of Man Man) and the two of them came up with this concept of a werewolf romance. I thought it was a great idea. Charlyne then reached out to Fred and Martin who she knew and they were both fans of the band and wanted to do it. Fred was really great. He flew out from New York for a night just to shoot it and was down for the cause. It’s really intended as a tribute to classic Hollywood B movies. There’s the Teen Wolf van surfing scene and an homage to several classic horror films. We weren’t really worried about getting it on MTV as much as we just wanted to do something completely original.

NOFX to release 10 inch cover album of old hardcore bands

According to this Ground Control interview, NOFX is planning a vinyl-only release features old hardcore acts. Fat Mike explained:

We’re putting out is a ten-song ten-inch of ten cover songs of old hardcore bands. hey’re all from the US and that’s all kind of what we grew up on. That’s already recorded and mostly they’re bands that no one ever heard of and most of their records never made it to CD. It’s pretty obscure – a couple of the bigger bands would be The Necros and Social Unrest and Stretch Marks. We’re just going to put it out and we’re not going to put any information on it; no credits, no song titles, no nothing – just a blank disc – so if you don’t know who it is, you won’t know who it is.

That will come later though – I’m not sure exactly when.

In the mean time, the band is releasing Coaster on April 28, 2009.
