Right now I am working overtime writing a new SOTY record!!! It’s turning out really good. I’m very happy with what’s coming out. My brain is in a very interesting stage in my life and it’s interesting how that affects what music comes out of me. I’m very delighted to say that I think this record is shaping up to be fucking great.

Pixies’ Frank Black sees a $5 world

In an interesting interview with NME, veteran musician and Pixies frontman Frank Black talked a little about his current impressions as a touring musician and why touring is far more more beneficial to a band’s success than putting out an album:

The rendezvous point between the patron and the artist has been moved from a record shop or onlineā€¦to live shows. People are excited about live personal appearances. That’s a great thing for live music. But now everyone is on the road. So there’s a lot of competition for your dollars.

I think what has to happen is everyone has to get used to making less money and have to charge less money. Everything’s got to get cut down to more of a five-dollar world. People will say, ‘Oh yeah, I’ll pay five bucks to see that or for a T-shirt or a record.’

I realize to some people I may sound like a hypocrite because the Pixies are getting ready to release a box set. I think the limited edition version retails for $450. But that art already exists – the demand for that particular product has been researched by the people putting it out. If people don’t buy it, we’ll all be fools.

I think everyone should sell whatever product they want to sell for whatever price they want to sell it for, but ultimately the market will dictate what it is and people will have to charge less money for everything. Record companies have been overcharging people for way too long and now this is the trouble that they’re in. They created this situation because they were just a little too greedy,

As reported earlier, the Minotaur box set is due out June 15, 2009.

Updates from Max Bemis of Say Anything

Max Bemis of Say Anything (and the Two Tongues) has posted a lengthy blog update on some of the band’s plans:

We’re done recording our new record, entitled Say Anything, and we’re moving into the mixing phase. It should be out this fall. This record is kind of a new start, or at least a new phase in the Say Anything story. You’ll be seeing some changes in our camp from the live show all the way to the lack of zoolander-esque promo shots.

We’ll be returning to touring sooner than you think, and in a way you’ve never seen or heard before. More on that to come, but we can assure you once the record is out we’ll be becoming true blue road warriors again. when my computer is fixed, I’ll be starting to do some semi-regular video updates leading up to the record. I semi-promise!

They released In Defense of the Genre in 2007.

Chuck Ragan finishes new record, “Gold Country”

Chuck Ragan has announced the completion of this new full-length and has titled it Gold Country. The record is due out September 1, 2009 via Side One Dummy Records.

Chuck had the following statement:

Just before heading overseas I finished up the last of the mixing and mastering of a new record I’ve recorded at Flying Whale Studios up here where I live in Northern California. Bruce Wheelock who’s been the man behind the board engineering this record has done a brilliant job and I’ve been nothing but pleased to work with him. I’ve also had the pleasure of having some great friends come in to put their art and instrumented passion down to back me up.

I’m very proud to call this new record “Gold Country.” Naming a project can be one of the hardest parts of the process. For me it always reveals itself when I just plain stop worrying about it. While overseas we were walking around Melbourne and a title started to make total sense to me. It considers the content and energy of which these songs were written, where they were written, where they were recorded and where everything I love and hold sacred is that I work and shove to get home to.

This is the first record that I’ve officially produced in full myself and so far I’m extremely proud of it!

Chuck will also be releasing a split 7-inch Gospel Songs with Gaslight Anthem‘s Brian Fallon.
