The Stooges to perform “Raw Power” live, reunite with James Williamson

The Stooges have announced plans to reunite their surviving Raw Power lineup and perform the album in its entirety. The band will be performing under the “Iggy and Stooges” moniker which was the name that Raw Power was released under. Frontman Iggy Pop insists that “The Stooges” as a band no longer exist due to the sad death of guitarist/bassist Ron Asheton in January.

Three of the four original members of the Michigan band re-formed as the Stooges in 2003 and toured regularly for five years, including in Australia, but they played nothing from Raw Power because the band’s line-up changed after its first two albums, the Stooges and Funhouse. When the band became Iggy and the Stooges to make their third album in 1973, guitarist Ron Asheton was replaced by James Williamson and Asheton played bass.

John Lisa (Serpico)

Serpico To many in the New York hardcore scene of the early to mid nineties, Serpico was an intriguing combination of melodic Dischord-esque harmonics and Jawbreaker style start and stop dynamics. The band, started as Sleeper and eventually, changed their name after getting paid off by the English band Sleeper (who kept the name and quickly faded into obscurity). Over the years members came and went at an alarming pace as the band played successful European tours, released seemingly hundreds of singles and several records, memorably on Excursion and C.I., the last on Equal Vision.

After the departure of original lead singer John Telenko (later of Darien and Amber Jets) he band went through more personnel turmoil, with the only constant being mainstay guitarist (and later lead vocalist) John Lisa. Lisa led the band on to what was perhaps their best record, the Rumble album on Equal Vision, before the band, tormented by personnel changes, infighting, and problems with Lisa’s conflicted feelings about his own closeted homosexuality, finally broke up in 1998. For years the band resisted any impetus to reunite as Lisa’s only musical forays were as a house music DJ! Now, after a hiatus of over a decade, the band has reunited for what may be their only new show, a reunion at Martini Red on Staten Island on January 17.

Brian Cogan caught up with John Lisa to find out the scoop on the reunion, and Serpico’s place in punk history. For the tour, the band will be a mixture of different eras with, consisting of: John Telenko: Vocals (later of Darien, Amber Jets), John Lisa: Guitar, Vocals, Michael Thomas DeLorenzo: Guitar (who later played in Kill Your Idols, Death Cycle and S.S.SP), Marc Treboschi: Bass (later of in Crowd) and Chris ‘Niser’ Guardino: Drums.

Green Day lashes out at Wal-Mart censorship policy

Green Day has come into conflict with the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, over the content of their new album, 21st Century Breakdown. The superstore chain refused to stock the CD because they wanted a version of the album edited for language and content and the band refused.

Billie Joe Armstrong responded:

Wal-Mart’s become the biggest retail outlet in the country, but they won’t carry our record because they wanted us to censor it. There’s nothing dirty about our record. They want artists to censor their records in order to be carried in there. We just said no. We’ve never done it before. You feel like you’re in 1953 or something.

If you think about bands that are struggling or smaller than Green Day … to think that to get your record out in places like that, but they won’t carry it because of the content and you have to censor yourself. what does that say to a young kid who’s trying to speak his mind making a record for the first time? It’s like a game that you have to play. You have to refuse to play it.

Wal-Mart said that it’s the company’s long-standing policy not to stock any CD with a parental advisory sticker. While Armstrong, Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool are still top-sellers without Wal-Mart, Armstrong said the store’s policy is disappointing, considering it has become the dominant seller of CDs with the decline of traditional music stores.

New Falcon material to be unveiled at Windy City Sound Clash

The Falcon are promising some new material at Windy City Soundclash this Saturday. The band posted this update:

One important thing of note is that we’ll be trying out a new song this weekend. At this point we’re calling it, “Spit Shining Shit”. Elegant, no? Maybe some more new stuff too, who knows. The final kicker in regards to this upcoming show is that we’ve got the last copies of “Unicornography” on LP and the only place you can still get ’em will be at the merch table. That is until those lovable, lazy dongs at Red Scare re-press it, but still, come out to the show and drink with us.

We posted the schedule for the event this week.
