Warren Oakes talks about his departure from Against Me!

James Montgomery of MTV spoke with now former Against Me! drummer, Warren Oakes, about his departure from the band, made official this week. According to the article:

He left Florida agit-punks Against Me! for a reason that is understandable and completely proletarian: He wanted to sell burritos. We talked about the AM! situation, and Oakes wanted it to be known that he wasn’t fired, but rather, his leaving the band “was really a mutual decision … it was really amicable.” He said he still considers the guys in the band to be “more than friends – they’re family,” and added that Boca is already carrying Against Me! guitarist James Bowman’s homemade hot sauce on the menu.

That Oakes did it does not make him a hero, it makes him like the rest of us. And perhaps that’s his lasting legacy … the everyman former drummer who ditched the dream and walked headlong into the rest of his life with grace and joy.

Warren adds:

I was feeling a little burnt-out on traveling all the time. It’s a full commitment being in Against Me! I mean, it’s 365 days a year, touring and working on new songs, and I always wanted to give 110 percent. Being in the band was a full-time job,” he said. “But it came to the point where I did have to face facts and realize I was starting to express interest in having some other things going on, and trying to split my time and energy just wasn’t going to cut it. So that was it. It was really sad – I was really bummed at first – but then the peace came. It felt really natural and it was a great run.

Warren’s final release with the band will be this summer’s The Original Cowboy due out July 7, 2009 via Fat Wreck Chords.

Paint It Black to release second 7″ of the summer through Fat Wreck Chords

Paint It Black Paint It Black has announced that Fat Wreck Chords will be releasing what will be the band’s second 7″ of the summer on August 18, 2009. The first 7″, Amnesia, drops June 16, 2009 via Bridge Nine. The band had this to say regarding their future release plans:

“We feel really fortunate that we’ve been able to release 3 albums that have been both exciting for us, and also well-received by the kids and the press. That being said, we can’t think of a single hardcore punk band that has released more than 3 awesome full-length records, and we’re not nearly arrogant enough to imagine that we’ll be the first band to make that happen. The 7″ EP has always been the ideal context for the kind of music we play, and so we’ve decided to release music in that format for the foreseeable future. The most exciting thing about this decision is that we don’t have to wait so long to release a new record, which lets us be more spontaneous and stay more intimately connected with the kids that support our band. So to sum up, we are stoked, and we hope you are too.”

The band’s 2008 full-length, New Lexicon was a favorite among Punknews.org readers.

The site features plenty of kitchy design from the early days of the Internet but the comp itself includes new tracks from the likes of Pissed Jeans, Flight of the Conchords, Fleet Foxes, Iron and Wine and many others.

Check it out here.

Jesse Michaels

Jesse Michaels: the man, the myth, the legend. A man? Well, that’s a given. The myth? Quite a few surround his whereabouts and doings during hiatuses over the course of his 20 year career. A legend? Most certainly. And while most are quick to remember him as the front man of the widely influential Operation Ivy, Jesse has amassed a healthy body of work with other projects over the years (including Big Rig, Common Rider, and occasional acoustic work). But, to let Jesse tell it, he’s always been more of an everyday man than a legend. On a recent tour date with his latest project (Classics of Love) Punknews.org’s own journalistic miscreant Dorian “Big D” Wolak found that out firsthand and took the opportunity given to dispel some of the rumors.
