Thrice addresses ‘Beggars’ leak

Thrice have updated their blog addressing the very early leak of their upcoming album, Beggars. The record apparently leaked onto the internet – albeit with voice watermarks – this Monday in advance of the October 13, 2009 release. The band had this to say:

Obviously, we’re incredibly disappointed with what happened. We understand that records leak constantly and that it’s almost entirely unavoidable nowadays, but we never thought we’d have to deal with a record leaking three months before it’s release date, and certainly never thought we’d have to deal with a leak before anyone in the band had even gotten a master reference of the record, or before the artwork for the booklet had even been completed.

We’re also disappointed that you’re hearing the record for the first time, watermarked, with a Vagrant Records voiceover over every song. And we’re disappointed that the leak has thrown a massive and immovable wrench into the efforts that many people have made to prepare for the three months leading up to release. That said, what’s done is done, and we’re moving forward.

“Beggars” will be available for download, legally and voiceover free–the way it was intended to be heard–as soon as we can possibly make it happen. Leaks happen overnight. Changing an entire retail marketing plan doesn’t.

Ben Weasel interviewed in Madison Decider

Ben Weasel of Screeching Weasel and Riverdales recently spoke to The Madison Decider about his move away from Chicago, the new release from Riverdales and his solo live album.

He commented on the possibility of another solo album:

It’s not a popular sentiment, I realize, and it’s probably the last thing a fan wants to hear from a musician-we’re all supposed to pretend we don’t care about money-but I think like anybody else in the world, even if you really love something, if you’re doing it and you’re not making money, that’s one thing. But if you’re doing it and you’re not making money because people want it but choose to steal it instead, then that’s really demoralizing…

Mary Walsh developing punk themed sitcom

The CBC is reporting that Newfoundland-based comedian and Canadian TV personality Mary Walsh is creating a pilot for a new half-hour comedy titled Rise Up. The show will feature Walsh as aging punk rocker Siouxie Power, who moves her family from small-town Newfoundland to an upscale Toronto neighborhood after winning the lottery. The character of her former husband (and presumably bandmate) has the stage name of Spook Sparks.

Walsh, a veteran of the This Hour has 22 Minutes program, is the lead creator of the show along with Kevin White, who wrote for Corner Gas, and Sara Snow, who wrote for DeGrassi. The series is being produced by Christina Jennings of Shaftesbury Films. A pilot has been approved by Canwest but it’s unknown if or when the show will air.
