Ipecac profiles in Indie Pit

Ipecac Recordings was recently profiles by Indie Pit. The blog looked at the structure of the label:

That’s because the label doesn’t exactly have one – at least, not in the traditional sense. Ipecac doesn’t actually own any of its releases. At any given moment, Ipecac licenses multiple releases. But those items are only “borrowed,” for a few years – at which point bands can bail and take the material elsewhere. And it’s hard to be miserable when a label is giving you ownership of your masters, unlimited creative control … oh, and by the way, Ipecac also splits royalties right down the middle with its artists.

Beastie Boys delay album, cancel tour due to illness

Beastie Boys have cancelled their recently announced tour dates and delayed their forthcoming record due to illness. The band’s label issued this statement:

Adam “MCA” Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch’s vocal chords. Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch’s surgery and recovery. The release of the band’s forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back.

Along with his longtime role in the Beastie Boys, Yauch is a producer having worked with the Bad Brains on their last album, and also a director working under the pseudonym Nathanial Hörnblowér.

New York Times looks at Warped Tour culture clash

In a review of the Uniondale, NY stop of the 2009 Warped Tour, the New York Times looked at the culture clash going on at the tour this year, particularly are provoked by Brokencyde and Millionaires. The article noted:

2009 will be remembered as the year the Warped Tour transmogrified into a rave. Or at least enough of one to inspire plenty of dancing, as well as several raised middle fingers, hurled slurs and bottles chucked at stages by fans unaccustomed to hearing synthesizers in their metalcore, or rapping in their punk.

It was Millionaires, though – three female rappers whose committed, dim music suggests an anime porn soundtrack – that made people take a stand. Then there were the bottles, raining down at a furious clip. Brokencyde, which inspires worst-band-of-the-millennium diatribes on the Internet and seems to have been willed into existence largely to irk the punk faithful, or any genre faithful.
