Jon Ginoli (Pansy Division)

Pansy DivisionHaving formed in 1991 in San Fransisco, Pansy Division were the pop-punk pioneer in the “homo-core” movement. The band was a Lookout! Records staple. Touring with Green Day at the height of their “Dookie” popularity just further added to the exposure Pansy Division would get and only made their voice, that much louder. It’s not often that a band as socially important as Pansy Division comes along. They have had a very busy first half of the year, between a new LP, a book and a DVD, Pansy Division are as busy as ever. Michael Kane caught up with Jon Ginoli singer and co-founder of Pansy Division.

Suburban Home to distribute novel soundtrack from Murder By Death

Murder By Death Suburban Home Records has announced that they will be distributing the latest project from Murder By Death, an instrumental score for a science fiction/fantasy/horror novel entitled Finch, written by Jeff Vandermeer. The band elaborated on the project:

“Jeff approached Murder By Death about doing a soundtrack to go with the limited edition of his new book, and we thought it was such a strange idea we had to do it. The book reminds us of Bladerunner- with spore-faced bad guys. Bitchin’. We locked ourselves up in our friend’s studio (Farm Fresh) here in Bloomington, IN for 5 days and wrote and recorded an instrumental album inspired by the book. Our old pianist Vincent Edwards lent his hand(s) at the piano, organs, and Rhodes. Each song is attempting to recreate a scene or mood from the book.”

The soundtrack will be released on the band’s own Tent Show Records. Murder By Death’s last proper full-length was 2008’s Red of Tooth and Claw, issued by Vagrant. Cover art and a synopsis for the book itself can be found here.

Apple unveils “iTunes LP”

In a event today, Apple unveiled their latest salvo against physical media with the iTunes LP. The product is designed to encourage more full album downloads from the store rather than the single song releases which largely dominate iTunes.

Accordingly, the company is bundling lyrics, liner notes, video, photos and “more.” While the “more” is unclear, at the very least, it will include extras like interactive booklets and other bonus material. In the past few years, CD sales have decreased significantly and digital services like iTunes and Amazon have taken over significant chunks of the market.

Interestingly, in the past few years, actual vinyl has had a minor resurgence, with both independent retailers like Vinyl Collective and Interpunk selling more vinyl, and at the same time, large retailers like Best Buy devoting shelf space to the venerable format.
