Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ headed to Broadway

Green Day have released a stream of the newly re-recorded version of their single, “21 Guns.” This recording features the band with the cast of their recently unveiled “American Idiot” musical. Although most of the songs in “American Idiot” will come from the album of the same name, ’21 Guns’ is one of the few from Green Day’s most recent album 21st Century Breakdown to be included in the show. A New York Times report confirms that the musical, American Idiot is headed to Broadway this Spring. The performance, based on the Green Day album American Idiot and also featuring music from 21st Century Breakdown, debuted last fall at Berkeley Repertory Theater in the band’s California hometown.

Producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman, director Michael Mayer and star John Gallagher Jr. all worked on 2007’s Tony-winning “Spring Awakening.” Mayer, Hulce and Pittelman will lead the “American Idiot” production in New York. The show will begin with preview performances on March 24, according to the Times report. The musical is scheduled to open April 20.
