Far to release ‘At Night We Live’

Far Far will be releasing their first new full length in more than a decade. The record is titled At Night We Live and is due out May 18, 2010. It is the follow-up to Water & Solutions which was released in 1998.

The band includes Jonah Matranga of Gratitude, New End Original, OneLineDrawing and Shaun Lopez of The Revolution Smile and (briefly) Rival Schools. Jonah commented on the record:

I’ve got ten years of interviews saying this would never happen, that Far would never play together, let alone make a record, so I really have no idea what will happen from here on out. All I know is that I’m really proud of the record, and I think it stands with anything we’ve made. Really, that’s all I cared about as we were making it. This record has some of our heaviest moments, our prettiest moments, our most epic moments, our weirdest moments — and even with all those twists and turns, I actually think it’s the most cohesive record we’ve ever made.

This month the band will be performing at the Noisepop Festival in San Francisco and San Diego’s Indie Fest.

Trailer for ‘Behind the Suit’ documentary posted

A trailer has been posted for Behind the Suit, a new documentary about the independent heavy music community and the associated labels. The film was produced by Robert Bolger Jr., and unlike most documentaries will focus on the people at labels rather than the musician-focus on most musicians. The film promises to showcase the truth of how the music industry is being affected by the downward spiral of hard CD sales and how established, new and up and coming artists must learn to adjust to these changing times with today’s major transition.

Beastie Boys’ Ad Rock mixes new Rival Schools track

Beastie Boys member Adam “Ad Rock” Horowitz has mixed a new song by Rival Schools, says guitarist Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand). The new track is titled “69 Guns,” according to a report from NME. The collaboration came together due to a connection between Horowitz and Rival Schools drummer Sam Siegler. It turns out that the two musicians both play basketball together. Schreifels added this about the song, which could appear on the band’s forthcoming album:

Sam plays basketball with Adam and he said, ‘Hey, will you mix a song?’ and Adam said yes. It could go on the album, it depends how good the mix is. It might just be interesting because Ad-Rock did it, or it could be brilliant! I think he’s a talent, but I haven’t heard it. It’s cool that he’s doing it – he sent me an email saying he had an idea for it. We’re thinking of it as a single. I have no idea what a single is these days, but it’s got a good beat and it could be played at a rock disco.

Rival Schools reunited after a lengthy break. They released their last album, United by Fate, in 2001.

Creator-Destructor signs Young Generals

Creator-Destructor Records has signed Redding, California’s post-punk outfit Young Generals. The band will enter Castle Ultimate Studios in Fremont, CA in March to record the follow up to their debut demo and 7″, released last year. The recording will surface in a 10″ as well as CD format, with an expected May 2010 release date.

Young Generals was formed by Curt Baer of the now defunct hardcore act Set It Straight. The band promises to combine the “grittiness and melody of classic Floridian punk bands, with a west coast flare akin to the Fat Wreck Chords style of the mid 90’s“. Check out some music on their MySpace page.
