Gabel abandoned his beat-up acoustic for an electric guitar and a full band long ago; his supporting players now include former Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay. Punks cried foul at first, maybe the same way studded-leather-jacketed kids felt when The Clash started selling out arenas. Many of them still haven’t forgiven Gabel for moving to a major label, disowning parts of his past and playing to a younger and often suburban audience.
The rough-hewn edges are gone and the songs are poppier, but as I realized while watching, Against Me! has always been a band about growing up. That doesn’t mean that a set list that includes a reflective and reactionary new song (“I Was a Teenage Anarchist”) and an older idealist anthem (“Baby, I’m an Anarchist”) make Gabel any less complicated of a musical persona. It just means that “being punk” is complicated, set against youthful fervor and the realization that nothing’s quite so black and white.
To celebrate the release of their first new album since 1990’s Smooth Noodle Maps, Devo continues to try unorthodox promotion. Today from 11am to 8pm, the band will host a live broadcast of the audio from their album and video of 20 cats for 9 hours. If you’ve ever wondered what cats would do while listening to Devo for 9 hours, this is your chance.
The broadcast starts at 11am PST (2pm EST) and you can find it via UStream.
The band took an unusual route for the track list of the album, by launching an Official Song Study. The band posted portions of each of the tracks they recorded for the album and asked fans to rank and vote about which songs would appear on the final full length. Of the sixteen songs shown in this way, fans and study participants selected the 12 that will appear on the album itself. The record is titled Something For Everybody and is due out today, June 15, 2010 via Warner SourceContinue reading Devo plans cat party for album stream→
