Chuck Ragan plans split with Brian Fallon

Chuck Ragan In a new interview, Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music spoke with Punk CD Sampler and discussed his solo work as well as his work with Hot Water Music. Chuck mentions that he has numerous split 7-inches including a collaboration with Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem. He explained:

Lately I’ve been writing a lot and working on writing a record with Brian Fallon from The Gaslight Anthem. We don’t have anything planned as far as when we’re gonna record it, it’s just something that we want to do. We’re just trading songs and taking it easy and letting it make itself over time.

We’ve been trading songs since last October. We’re moving on it slowly, but it’s kind of at a stand-still right now with, ya know, Gaslight’s in full swing after releasing their new record. So we’re excited about it, but we’re both moving strong and fast in our own directions. It’s something that we want to do, and will do, it’s just a matter of time and when and where. We talked about it early next year, of getting together and laying stuff down and seeing where it goes. But there’s no expectations and we’re just kinda having fun with it right now. So we’re just looking to keep it relaxed and make a great record.

You can listen to the entire interview here.

The two bands have a split 7″ in the works, and Hot Water Music hasn’t experienced this flurry of activity in years; in addition to recently touring Europe (albeit with RKL/Lagwagon drummer Dave Raun hitting the skins in place of George Rebelo, who’s currently busy with Against Me!), the band also released another live 7″ and is planning a new full-length on top of that.

Interviews: Daryl Jenifer (Bad Brains)

Bad BrainsThere are some bands that don’t always translate on the first listen. You could love a band. They could represent some great time in music, but when playing them for a friend to hear the first time, it won’t carry. Maybe that friend needs some kind of context or narrative to explain why Lifetime was such an important band. Then maybe after a few listens, and a mixtape or two, they’ll get it.

That is not the case with Bad Brains. Nobody is going to argue whether or not The Bad Brains are important. It’s pretty much accepted that they were the first band to play the style that would become known as, “hardcore.” Their first album is unquestionably a perfect record. Their records are peppered with reggae tracks that provide an often much needed respite from the hardcore blitzkrieg of songs like, “Supertouch,” and they did a great deal to break down the color barriers of a music scene that was predominantly white.

Punknews interviewer Jon Reiss recently spoke with member Daryl Jenifer shedding some light on went into the making of this band that engendered a genre, gave rise to a whole new style of mosh and introduced a slew of people to the word, “Jah.”
