Street Dogs have announced the details for their upcoming album. The record is still slated for a release on August 31, 2010 and will be self-titled. It was co-produced by bass player Johnny Rioux and Rick Barton and engineered and mixed by Jason Livermore (Rise Against, NOFX) at the infamous punk rock recording studio The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, CO. Singer Mike McColgan notes:

We have songs about personal empowerment, personal freedom and the search for personal redemption on our record. We have a song called “Hang Em’ High” that talks about the corruption of Bernie Madoff and a song called “Wild In Portland” that speaks of economic downturn and it’s fallout.

There are also songs that eulogize our fallen friends who didn’t fair too well in the game of life and songs that praise our family and our roots. And a song entitled “Up The Union” for EFCA (Employee Free Choice Act) legislation which would make it less difficult for employees to organize labor unions and lessen the chance of employer reprisal for organizing. We’ve got a Saturday night, punk rock throwdown anthem in our song “Punk Rock And Roll” and with “Rattle And Roll.” I pay homage once again to Dorchester and Dot Rats!

The album is self-titled because it’s collectively as a group coming forward and saying this is our best and most definitive work so far.

Envy on the Coast have called it quits. The band posted a lengthy note on their Facebook, some of which is excerpted here:

The day has come to pull down that curtain down. Sal and Jer sat down with Brian and I about a week ago and informed us that they are leaving Envy on the Coast. They explained that they are no longer happy being a part of this, and there was nothing Brian and I could do or say to change that. Because Envy on the Coast was founded upon the musical and personal relationships between the four of us, Brian and I have decided that we would rather move forward rather than finding musicians to replace Sal and Jer.

The band released Lowcountry in March.

San Jose, CA, pop-punkers The Pillowfights teamed up with Bob from Shinobu to make a music video for the track “Hokay” from their Silver Sprocket debut, Round One, which is available for streaming in its entirety now on the band’s punknews.org profile page.

The Pillowfights were joined by Smokejumper from Seattle, WA, at Insubordination Fest and the just completed Escape From Monster Island tour, named after a comment on punknews.org. The Pillowfights and Smokejumper were touring in support of their new split 7″ EP, Uh Huh, available now for mail-order from Silver Sprocket. The band’s next release is expected to be a split 7″ EP with The Measure (SA).

Lou Dax succumbed on June 20th, 2010 to the coma brought on by a head wound sustained in New York City on May 6th. Lou is survived by his 4 sons. Bridge Nine Records will be reissuing the long-out-of-print 7-inch EP from early 1980’s hardcore outfit Antidote. The disc was first released in 1983 and limited to 1000 copies. Since then, the record has been a favorite of bootleggers and sells for many times it’s sticker price on eBay. Antidote guitarist Robb Nunzio said this:

Seeing an original copy of the 7 inch going for hundreds of dollars on Ebay really put things into perspective – kids should be able to afford and enjoy that fantastic record.

Bridge Nine will be releasing the album on 7-inch, CD and digital formats on August 24, 2010. Bridge Nine boss Chris Wren commented on the significance of the record:

Thou Shalt Not Kill is one of the most important hardcore records of all time. The songs on that record are timeless and I knew that I wanted to expose a whole new generation of fans to Antidote, but still do the re-release justice so the old fans would be excited as well.

To that end, the packaging will be kept original with updated liner notes from Robb Nunzio. ntidote will be playing some upcoming shows in support of the Thou Shalt Not Kill re-release including a special show in Boston as part of the “Gallery East Reunion Show” on Aug. 29th. DYS, Jerry’s Kids, FU’s and Gang Green will also be playing as well as Soul Control, Refuse Resist and The Revilers.

For their new video, Coheed and Cambria cut together footage from the classic science fiction film, Metropolis. The original film, released in 1927 and directed by German film pioneer Fritz Lang, was a silent movie about the struggle between workers and industry. Coheed repurposes the video to be a criticism of “cultural elitists” like those in the music press. Frontman Claudio Sanchez spoke to Wired magazine about the commentary:

The song ‘World of Lines’ is primarily about what the music press has become in the post-millennium, seeking to create a musical and cultural elitism, and casting those not ‘in favor’ aside. The film Metropolis echoes this basic concept, as it centers around the divisions of the elite who control everything and the workers who don’t have any power over their destiny.

The documentary series, Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars but Were Afraid to Ask, mentioned here last month has apparently been banned from larger online retailer Amazon.com. A new Huffington Post report looks into why but could not get much of a response:

Amazon was offered John Roecker’s “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars,” and refused it, because of “content.” They stock some titles from the same distributor (who declined to comment on this matter). Amazon also has carried Roecker’s “Live Freaky Die Freaky” and “Disease and Punishment.” No one has heard back from Amazon about what exactly in the content bothers them. Considering what else they stock, it’s be interesting to learn why a documentary which treats porn actors with compassion and dignity is not acceptable to them.

Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong provided music for the series which was directed by John Roecker who has previously collaborated with Armstrong, as well as members of Green Day and others. The DVD is due out July 27, 2010.

In a new interview with KCTV5, the new touring Sublime With Rome, have hinted at plans for a new album. Frontman Rome Ramirez discussed the possibility of new material, the likes of which has not been heard from any Sublime incarnation since the death of vocalist and songwriter Bradley Nowell just before the release of their successful album, Sublime in 1996. He said this:

My expectation is to do our best. We expect to play really good. If we’re not playing good, we’re not doing this, we’re not doing something right. But further than the tour, our expectations are to get in the studio and write the next great album of the decade.

The band debuted a new song, “Panic,” when performing live on Jimmy Kimmel. Check that out here.

The band features the founding Sublime rhythm section of drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson with new singer-guitarist Rome Ramirez. They assumed the slightly modified name after settling a lawsuit with the family of deceased founding member and singer Bradley Nowell over its use. This years tours will be Gaugh and Wilson’s first tour under the name Sublime (“With Rome” or otherwise) in nearly 14 years. They are on the road now.
