Tom Waits releases limited edition hand-numbered 78 rpm vinyl record

The legendary Tom Waits collaborated with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to release an extremely limited 78 RPM vinyl recording of “Tootie Ma Was A Big Fine Thing” , and “Corrine Died On The Battlefield.” The two tracks were originally recorded in 1947 by Danny Barker, and are the earliest known recorded examples of Mardi Gras Indian chants. Proceeds from the sale of this project will benefit the Preservation Hall Junior Jazz & Heritage Brass Band.

The first one hundred records will be accompanied by a custom-made Preservation Hall 78rpm record player as part of a Deluxe Donation package. The remaining four hundred and four will be available as a standalone record for the Basic Donation package.

The Menzingers recording acoustic LP for Red Scare

Scranton’s finest exports The Menzingers are currently in the midst of recording an acoustic album. Currently untitled the album is being recorded in the band’s apartment in South Philadelphia. The release will be coming out via Red Scare.

The band released Chamberlain Waits this year. The band is heading down to the Fest this year and then will be heading across the pond to Europe for the rest of the year.

Street Dogs record pro-Tibet PSA

Street Dogs have recorded a new PSA to express their support for a “Free Tibet.” The band has joined with the non-profit Built On Respect to raise awareness for human rights violations in Tibet. Vocalist Mike McColgan, and Built on Respect founder, Heidi Minx, call particular attention to the recent crackdowns on jailed Tibetan artists Tashi Dhondup and Dhondup Wangchen commented:

We enjoy certain freedoms living in a democracy, and one of them is using our voices for human rights. We are particularly appalled at the charges and sentences against filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen and singer, Tashi Dhondup.

The Mag Seven: “My War” (Black Flag)

The Mag Seven have launched a 80 second preview of their cover of Black Flag‘s classic, “My War” from 1984’s My War. The song will appear on the band’s upcoming digital and vinyl release, Black Feathers, which is due out November 16th, 2010. The instrumental band has featured members of Black Flag, Descendents, Rise Against, Toadies, Hagish, Only Crime, True Widow and more. The artwork for the EP (seen here) was painted by James O’Barr (creator of The Crow graphic novel).
