Point of Existance Mod Update

Point of Existance was (and is) a very good modern warfare mod for the Battlefield Vietnam game. They are currently developing the mod for the Battlefield 2 engine and are making significant progress. While no release date is mentioned, the fact that they have entered “level design testing” is very encouraging. From the PoE website:

These are exciting times as we are happy to announce that we released our first internal build to our test team to begin “level design testing” on Saturday. Currently there are seven maps on the test server and as we continue our development process some more might be added for our fist release.

The team has gone through our list of items to develop and have decided that it’s time for “content cutoff” and nothing else will be added to .1 except for the previously approved items. The graphics department is still working hard on providing additional weapons/vehicles for everyone’s enjoyment so stay tuned to our weekly updates to view more things that will be added.

EA BF2 Update – Patches and Booster Packs, Oh My!

Thanks to Duck for spotting this one 😉

In a community update, EA/DICE provided some details on the upcoming 1.2 patch for Battlefield 2 as well as info on the two “Booster Packs” that they are releasing this spring. The patch is currently in beta testing and seems to be addressing many of the complaints that have been heard from the community. The first of the “Booster Packs”, called “Euro Force” will be released on February 8th and sees the introduction of the all-new European Army (with new weapons and vehicles) in 3 new maps. March 28th sees the release of “Armored Fury” which will focus on large armored battles.

Alternative Battlefield Ranking

I stumbled upon this at Planet Battlefield today and it sounds interesting for those running an unranked BF2 server. According to their website, “Alternative Battlefield Ranking is a collection of scripts, which provide the same functionality as the original official battlefield 2 ranks, without having to pay for a ranked server.”

EA/DICE has recently given permission for this effort to go forward regarding Battlefield 2 and Related Products, and it will offer support for general unranked servers as well as those running mods similar to that seen from BFTracks and BFStats in the Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam days.

EA Gives Away Free Battlefield 2 “Booster Packs” (Unless you play on a PC)

Somewhere deep in the bowels of EA, someone decided that because I bought Battlefield 2 for the PC, that I care about Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for XBox. This is part of a Battlefield Newsletter email that I received today:

“Play 3 new maps; Frostbite, Full Frontal and Hidden.
Take control of the new attack snowmobiles with dual-mounted machine guns, modified pickup trucks with .50 cal armament, assault vans loaded with mini-guns, and a RIB boat with four open positions.
All-new arctic camouflage for your soldiers helps you blend into the winter background.
Download the Warsome Booster Pack from Xbox Live TODAY!”

In what I can only hope is a marketing SNAFU, DICE issues a Press Release on the same day touting the success of the Special Forces Expansion and discussing the future of Battlefield 2. That future includes releasing two “Booster Packs” for Battlefield 2 in 2006, for $9.99 each. So, if I am reading this correctly, XBox owners get new content and weapons for FREE, while us lowly PC players have to pay.

Merry Christmas!

Desert Conflict CTF Mod Update

These guys are on a role. They are back again with an update on the progress of their Capture the Flag mini-mod after releasing their first version just last weekend. In addition to adding in Kubra Dam as a CTF map, the flag icons can be seen across the battlefield and update them in near-real time. The flag icon also shows through solids and has a distance reading on it for those all important “Get Our Flag Back!” moments. They have lengthed the time the flag hangs around after being dropped and it should not disappear immediately any longer.

They expect to be testing this week and have version .2 out to the general public soon along with some more BF2 maps included. Anyone will also be able to host a server with the .2 release as well now that they are more confident in the stability of the server side game.

Look for more information at the Desert Conflict website

The next BF2 Patch

Desert Conflict Capture the Flag v 0.1

I have been playing the Desert Conflict Capture the Flag mini-mod (version .1) for BF2 since Saturday and must say have been having a blast. While this is an early release and there are some things that I think need changing, it is a challenging and fun game and for me any how, has completely surpassed the fun that I was having with the Special Forces Expansion. At this point, there are only three maps (Mashtuur City, Wake, and Zatar Wetlands) but Karkand is coming as soon as some bugs are worked out.

If you played CTF for BF42 and liked it, give this one a shot.

Sony DRM + WoW = Hax!

Atomm reported on the Sony/BMG “rootkit” DRM software problems a few days ago. What he didnt tell you was that enterprising World of Warcraft hackers have figured out that you can use the loopholes created by the DRM software to hide your hacks from “The Warden” – Blizzards anti-cheat program which is controversial in its own right. You can read the small article on the matter here.

PBF Interview with Forgotten Hope Mod Team

In the first interesting mod news in a while, PlanetBattlefield has posted an interview that they did with the Forgotten Hope mod team. Contrary to most recent information regarding on going mod development, this interview gets into the dynamics of gameplay and gives us our first indications of how the BF2 engine will be adopted to WWII game play.

Here is an excerpt from the interview posted here

PBF: “What are you going to do with BF 2s Commander Mode? Will it be removed, adapted for a WW II setting, completely changed?”

FH: “FH 2’s command system will be heavily modified from the BF 2 system to better suit FH 2’s gameplay and historical accuracy. New features such as smoke barrages air strikes, and a few others will be added to the commander’s arsenal, as well as a unique “recon system” to provide battlefield intelligence to the command map in place of satellite and UAV scans.”
