The Inquirer Recommends Avoiding Bioshock

like the plague and we at Gamers Radio completely agree. We were excited by the originality this game presented, but due to DRM and conflicting reports about a possible Rootkit being installed, we have taken a 180.

From the Inquirer , "The problems stem from SecuROM, a DRM infection of unconscionable proportions, brought to you by the good people of Sony, again. 2KGames took the anti-user step of hurting paying customers with this malware in order to prevent piracy, but if you don't want to end up with a system filled with unremovable malformed registry keys and an uninstallable coaster, your only recourse is to pirate it."

"If the whole screwing of the consumer in this was wasn't evil enough, they managed to lower the standard yet again. SecuROM will hose you if you run AVG antivirus like I do…." and as do I. Since I installed the demo before all of this was brought to the light, I have had a lot of strange problems occur on my system, including AVG. I can not say if they are related, but I do know they didn't start until I installed the demo.

It is a shame that Take2 would do something so irresponsible in a single player game. When will these companies learn the only people they hurt are their customers and their bottom line because of the additional costs involved in supporting the people who bought their game. And for the record, the hacked warez version of Bioshock is already available. Again proving the only thing DRM does is hurt the people who actually pay you. Good going Take2. I will add you to my list of companies to avoid in the future.

Verizon: Ma Bell Would Be Proud!

Yesterday, I received my telephone Bill from Verizon. It is usually a non-event, but this time I was in for the shock of my life. Having recently moved half way across the country, my wife and I make a lot of Long Distance calls back to our family. Because of this, I purchased an Unlimited Long Distance plan so we could call home without worry about the cost. Imagine my surprise when I open my bill and see $350 worth of Long Distance calls. What follows is a recount of my calls to Verizon to fix the problem. Continue reading Verizon: Ma Bell Would Be Proud!

One More Example of Congressional Idiocy….

Discovered this via BoingBoing and although it isnt the usual type of thing posted here at GamersRadio, it seems like something that word needs to be spread about.

It seems as though a bill has been introduced into the Senate that would ban the weather service from publishing weather data. Instead, that data would go directly to companies like Accuweather (a contributor to the Senator sponsoring the bill) to publish for profit. The problem that I have with this is that as taxpayers we pay for that weather data to be collected

Reproduced from BoingBoing:

“The National Weather Services Duties Act (S.786) would ban NWS from “competing” with private entities by making it unlawful for the agency to publish user-friendly weather data and barring NWS experts from speaking one-on-one to news agencies. Why? Because Senator Santorum believes that companies like AccuWeather would make more money if they didnt have to compete with “free.” Thats right – he believes you should pay twice for your weather information in order to line the pockets of the private weather industry, which *already* benefits from repackaging the data that tax-funded agencies like NWS give away. Thats not only unfair, its a bad precedent for our national information resources.”

If you dont think that this bill is a good idea, you can send an email to your States Senators via the Electronic Frontier Foundation

Ashlee Lip Sync Excuse

liveDaily reports: [A bit of a follow up to the story in yesterdays Day in Rock about Ashlee Simpsons lip sync adventure on SNL.] In a Monday (10/25) interview on New York City radio station Z100 FM, Joe Simpson, Ashlees father and manager, said that he convinced Ashlee to use backing tracks when acid reflux caused her vocal cords to swell.

“[Ashlee] sang in the rehearsal–theres a full rehearsal right before the show, which is with a live audience–and by the end of that time she was so scratchy and her throat was hurting her so bad she started crying,” Joe Simpson said. “We called … her doctor in L.A.; he said, Dont let her sing. I said, Theres no way I can not let her sing–weve got to sing the show.

“So we made the decision to pull up backing tracks to help her push through the song, because otherwise she wouldve sounded just like a frog–and no one wants to hear a frog on Saturday Night Live unless its a skit.” [see full story for more]

Nasa Beats Duke Nukem Forever

I ran across an interesting quote in the upcoming December 2004 issue of Computer Gaming World concerning the amount of time it has taken to develop Duke Nukeem Forever. You will recall that Duke Nukem Forever started out in January 1997 on the Quake II engine. Word has it we may have the game in our hands around late 2005. The quote:

“Rovers Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, designed, launched, and successfully landed on Mars in less time.”

Can you say pwnd! Sorry, It was too funny and I had to share with the rest of the class. 🙂

Judge Denies Testing of Love

This is old news, but since I have been following the story, I thought it would be a good idea to post it anyway. The Judge presiding over Love Vs Grohl and Novaselic denied Grohl and Novaselics request to have Love psychologically tested. In a strange twist, he also stated that Loves attorney could not claim Courtney Love signed the LLC agreement while under mental duress based on their petition to have the psychological evaluation request dismissed.

Dont you just love it. Seems the Bitch screwed herself after all!

Mom out of touch with reality…

I debated making this the Up Yours Award winner of the week, but due to the serious nature of this topic, I decided against it.

Let me get this out in the open as quickly as possible. The sad truth of this story is suicide sucks and sometimes people commit suicide because they need help.

Take Shawn Woolley, a 21 year-old EverQuest player who committed suicide last November. His mother Elizabeth Woolley is suing Sony Online Entertainment due to his death.
