Week 3

Week 3 of the in game blog: New Mutation, Landslide Victory!, and what rages you?

New Mutation

Follow the Liter

Scavenge one can at a time.

No more fighting over what cans to grab first. This Mutation spawns only one group of cans at a time, so survivors know exactly where to go. There is only one problem: the Infected know exactly where they are going.

LANDSLIDE VICTORY!!!

Last week’s poll asking if we should make Realism Versus a permanent mode ended up telling us clearly – make it permanent. The final results were 68% Yes, 21% No, and 11% No Opinion. Thanks everyone for voting, even those of you who have no opinion. Next week we will have news on when this Mutation will become permanent.

Don’t Get Mad At This Poll

Do you play Versus Mode? Do you ever get frustrated mid-match and quit? Do you ever Rage Quit? If you do, why? While we can collect hard stats on this behavior, finding the motivation behind the behavior will help.

We will continue the Play with Devs games this Friday. We might even be forming Valve teams to take on your team! Look for us all this weekend using steam names – L4D2_DEV_1, L4D2_DEV_2, L4D2_DEV_3, L4D2_DEV_4, L4D2_DEV_5. All valid dev accounts are members of the Valve steam group. On the Xbox 360 we will be playing under L4D2 DEV 1, L4D2 DEV 2, L4D2 DEV 3, L4D2 DEV 4, L4D2 DEV 5. Our friends lists are full, but just play Follow the Liter and look for us. And please, try not to rage quit.

Check back next week for info on the next mutation: Last Gnome on Earth.

RailWorks Glasgow Airport Rail Link Add-on Released

RailWorks Glasgow Airport Rail Link Add-on is now available on Steam.

The Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL) was a proposal to directly link Glasgow Central station with Glasgow International Airport in Scotland, United Kingdom. The link was intended for completion by 2013 and would have had a service of four trains per hour running along a semi-reconstructed via Cardonald, Hillington East and Hillington West, to Paisley Gilmour Street station. It would then have branched-off onto a new purpose-built 1.2 mile (1.9 km) line taking it over the M8 motorway into the airport.

Totalize Media have created numerous add-ons for rail simulation games. GARL is their most ambitious project to date featuring the whole route* covering 9km of existing track from Glasgow Central to Paisley St James and an additional 1.9km of new track between the proposed Airport Junction and Glasgow International Airport.

Imagine if I hadn’t been drunk

We’re shipping a quick update to clean up some of the confusion around the 119th Update badges. We initially chose to calculate which badge to give players based on the beta release of TF2, because that was the date that customers could first play TF2. This turns out to have been a mistake, largely because many players did the math and thought they were getting something other than what they ended up with. So to remove that confusion, this new update moves that date forward to the official retail release of TF2, the 10th October 2007, and reissues updated badges to anyone who would be affected by that date shift.

We also felt it was still important to reward those who were there on the first moment TF2 went live, and helped us by beta testing prior to release. So we’ve added a new “Primeval Warrior” badge, which will replace the badge of anyone who purchased TF2 prior to the official release date.

On a quick side note, we’ve been having fun watching QuickActionTF2’s movies, which inspired Community Fortress’s Moments of Glory. If you haven’t seen the latest one, it’s worth it just for knoxxx’s awesome move. It’s also a great way to brush up on your french.

Shattered Horizon Firepower Weapons Pack Released

Updates to Shattered Horizon have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The update adds the Firepower weapons pack to the game.

New content:
Five primary weapons: Railgun, Machinegun, Assault Rifle, SMG and Shotgun
Three sidearms: Pistol, Grenade Pistol and Moon Mining Pick
Three new grenades: Flare, Pulse and Decoy

You choose your primary weapon before you spawn and carry that weapon until you are killed. You can select the weapon for your next spawn at any time by pressing the F1 key. All primary weapons and the pistol have sights you can use by pressing MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTON for greater aiming precision. Regardless of which primary weapon you choose you always have access to your sidearms: a pistol, grenade pistol and a melee weapon.

You can read more about the different weapons and their characteristics by downloading the updated game manual from Steam or from http://www.shatteredhorizon.com/media/ShatteredHorizon_GameManual.pdf

Changes:

  • Bullet flight time is now accurately modeled for each weapon
meaning you will need to lead targets that are far away.
  • Tracers now accurately show where your bullets are going.
  • Reloading animation can now be interrupted by other actions such as
    melee, boost or switching weapons.
  • Added a range meter on the HUD when using the Grenade Pistol.
  • Changes to HUD layout to accommodate new weapons.
  • Changes to default key bindings.
  • Added options in sh.settings file to change filtering and pingback
    in server browser.

Aliens vs Predator Update Released

Updates to Aliens vs Predator have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted.

Client

  • Fix for a Skybox rendering problem in D3D11 build on Nvidia Fermi cards
  • Various small D3D11 optimisations
  • Fixed rare bug where clients would get stuck on the loading screen.
  • Fix clients not seeing the ‘custom match’ flag updating in the ‘Browse’ screen when the dedicated server was changing settings after initially hosting a match without changing any variables
  • Use an [R] prefix for rcon command output text upon successful receipt of a rcon command
  • Prevent windows cursor being stolen when starting in windowed mode but then doing ALT-TAB immediately.
  • Show (and sort) dedicated server search results as they come in instead of waiting for search to complete before displaying anything.
  • Fix extraneous [Team] appended to MOTD text when joining game in progress
  • Invitations to dedicated server games now work.
  • Fixed all dedicated server games showing as “at lobby” in the server browser, regardless of being at lobby or in progress.

Dedicated server

  • Fixed “Ghost players” being created on a server if the Steam backend could not be reached for authentication when someone connected. These appeared in the player counts when browsing servers, and in the server details player list when viewing servers in the Steam client server list.
  • Added more info to server console when players connect/disconnect, and print out the player list in the command window (including scoreboard) at the end of each game.
  • Use an [R] prefix for rcon commands and echo command output to server console as well as sending it to rcon client.
  • Enabled logfiles (writes out console output and some command line errors only to files in logfiles_dedicatedserver). You can still override the logfile directory by specifying -logdir on the command line and if you do so any logfiles from a previous session will be archived in a directory called logfile_backups.
  • Small performance optimisations
  • Dedicated server species ratios’ commands check for unset values and report the default values instead of the invalid value (-1). The dedicated server was correctly setup in this case, but the command feedback text was inaccurate
