The Soldier/Demo war has generated more email than any event in Team Fortress history. The number one question I’m being asked is “are you going to publish any new information over the weekend?” Absolutely we are. In fact, here’s some news right now: As of THIS MOMENT, there is still an M&M lodged up TF artist Drew Wolf’s nose. Drew’s in the hospital, and the entire team’s thoughts and prayers go out to that brave little peanut M&M. Well, have a great weekend everyone!

A day later, the war rages on—the kill tally is, quite literally, in the millions, and the forums are alive with the sounds of people having good, friendly fun while hurling bitter, teary-eyed recrimination at one another.

You’ll be happy to know the Demo/Soldier War has even taken hold inside the Valve offices. Sides have been drawn. Normally cheerful co-workers point fingers and whisper angry things about other co-workers’ mothers. It’s dark, folks. The police have been called eight times today. Granted, times two, three and seven were was because TF2 team member Drew Wolfe kept getting an M&M stuck up his nose, but I think you take my point: this thing’s starting to get interesting.

So what better move on our part than to add fuel to the fire? Check out our new Propaganda Contest, which has prizes like a one-of-a-kind exclusive in-game item for use by you and you only, NAMED after you and you only, and bearing your name (and your name only) on it.

• KF-Icebreaker – Winner of the $10,000 grand prize in the mapping competition and one of the most ambitious, creative, and visually stunning Killing Floor maps ever made, Icebreaker is set on a large icebreaking ship that is pitching and rolling in the middle of a fierce storm.
• KF-Departed – Winner of second place in the final wave of the mapping competition, Departed is a visually impressive level set in an industrial city area outside of London. Featuring hectic gameplay this map plays as good as it looks.
• KF-Crash – Winner of third place in the final wave of the mapping competition, Crash is an impressive remake of a classic custom map for the original Killing Floor mod. The map is set in an urban storage facility where your team’s helicopter has crashed.
• KF-FilthsCross – Winner of second place in the first wave of the mapping competition, FilthsCross is both incredibly fun and intense. Be warned, this map set in an Underground tube station is one of the most challenging Killing Floor maps ever made.

Changelist for Mare Nostrum:

• 26 all new Steam achievements.
• 14 new infantry weapons, such as the ever-distinctive Thompson submachine gun, Bren machine gun, Beretta 1934 pistol, and the SMLE rifle.
• Full Italian and Polish localisations.
• Over 20 new crewable vehicles including the Carro Armato M13/40 and Semovente 75/18 for the Italians, countered with multiple Valentine tank variants, plus the Stuart I, Matilda II and Vickers Mk VIB.

12 new maps, including:

• Crete – Fallschirmjager units dropping into the midst of Australian defenders in this classic battle.

• Road To Tunis – The war in North Africa is almost over, but the British must first push the Axis tanks from one last mountain valley to reach Tunis.
• Tobruk Central – The Australian defenders have been under siege for longer than they can remember, how much longer will they be able to hold out?
• Bardia – The Italian garrison is surrounded, but they will not give us this cliff top town and its valuable port without a struggle.

In the sixteen hours since war was declared between the Demoman and the Soldier, a whopping 2,681,005 kills (and counting) have been tallied. That’s bloody astonishing! And it’s all thanks to you! You should all be proud of yourselves!

Those of you worried that you’re missing prime exam-studying time right now, keep in mind you’re now participating not only in the bloodiest war Team Fortress 2 has ever seen, but the bloodiest battle, ever, of all time. I don’t want to oversell how big this is, but I am not exaggerating when I say that this war can be seen from space. If a prospective employer isn’t impressed by reading that on your college transcript, watch out—you might be applying for a job as a five-year-old girl.

So: how is the War update different from our other class updates?

In many ways, it’s not. Like any other class update, the War update will reveal three new weapons each for the Demoman and Soldier throughout the week, as well as some maps, achievements, and surprises, right up until the day of release, when everything we’ve been teasing goes live.

Where the War update differs from other class updates is that we’ve decided to mix things up a little with, as the Administrator would say, “a healthy competition.” A secret, exclusive seventh weapon has also been developed by the TF2 team. In other words, either the Soldier or the Demo (but NOT both) is walking out of this update with one more weapon than the other. If you want your class to have it, you’re going to have to fight for it. The more Demomen you kill as the Soldier class will help ensure the Soldier gets the weapon at the end of the week. The more Soldiers you kill as the Demo will help the Demo class get the exclusive seventh weapon. Check back daily to see how your class is doing at the War hubpage — this is also where you’ll see links to all the leaked previews of the weapons, maps, and surprises releasing soon with this update.

What if some of you try to cheat to bump the numbers? We’ll know. (Though we also know many of you won’t be able to resist trying anyway.)
