****** VAST Helps Indie Artists ******

Day in Rock reports: Jon Crosby of Vast has been keeping real busy of late. Were not talking touring and recording, Crosby has been spreading his wings a bit. Thought it would good to highlight two of his projects here. One, Crosby is now an author. He is about to release his first book “Turquoise and Crimson”. Details are a bit sketchy but it sounds as if it is a non-fiction Kerouac-esq tome. The book is slated for release in October (preorders are now being taken, first 200 received a personalized, numbered and autographed copy. – see full story link)

Rockers writing a book isnt too out of character, but Crosby other major new project is. He has founded a storefront website called 2blossoms, which is billed as “a multi-media sanctuary for artists”. It appears the idea behind the project is to give indie artists a place to showcase and sell their material. 100% of the profit goes to the artists, all they have to pay is a $5 monthly membership fee. Not a bad deal! Kudos to Jon for doing this. Click the full story link to check it out, preorder the book and if you are Vast fan you can purchase “Turquoise” and “Crimson” – 2 sets of 10 MP3s for only $2.99 per set.

Check out Johns website for Indie Artists at http://www.2blossoms.com/

Drowned In Sound has more.

****** Halford Sings Sabbath *****

Blabbermouth reports: Ozzy Osbourne was forced to sit out BLACK SABBATHs performance at Thursday nights (Aug. 26) Ozzfest in Camden, NJ due to an attack of bronchitis. He was replaced at the concert by none other than JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford. Halford had previously joined SABBATH for two gigs to support Ozzy on his last shows for the “No More Tours” tour in November 1992 in Costa Mesa, CA after SABBATHs singer at the time, Ronnie James Dio, refused to take the stage.

Grokster Cleared in MGM Lawsuit, Big Implication for File Sharers

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) won a preliminary ruling today against MGM studios and several other major Holywood players in their lawsuit against Grokster. If the ruling is upheld, it sets a precedent that file sharing programs such as Grokster, Kazaa, Morpheus, etc. cannot be held responsible for the content on their networks. This ruling will have a huge positive effect on the future of filesharing in general.

Epitaph Records Music News

Spent some time browsing the Epitaph Records website recently and found some things of interest on a number of bands….

Hepcat: For those who dont know Hepcat, they are an L.A. band that play an infectious style of ska that resurrects the rythms and swagger of the Studio One music that came out of Jamaica in the 1960s. They are re-releasing their first album Out of Nowhere and are celebrating with a few rare tour dates. If you are anywhere near any of these shows I recommend that you go see them. I saw them on the original Out of Nowhere tour in the early 1990s and they just blew me away. If you cant see them live, check out the CD or at the very least get the free mp3. You can find out more here. Continue reading Epitaph Records Music News

Kid Rock Pisses Off VFW

By now, you have all probably heard about Janet Jacksons boob show during the half time performance of the Superbowl. Did you know that Tivo said it was the most watched thing ever recorded in the history of Tivo?

What I bet you havent heard is the VFW is ticked off at Kick Rock for cutting an American Flag down the center and wearing it as a poncho during his performance.

Foxnews has a little bit about it: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,110455,00.html.

Always a controversy…… Sheesh!

Has Hell Frozen Over?

Id like to congratulate Warner Brothers music for being the first record label to actually get it. Dont get me wrong, I still think all major record labels are scum and I will as long as they support the RIAA.

MTV.com has the full scoop on Waner Bros. releasing a new band called The Secret Machines debut album on the internet 4 months before you can buy it in stores. Here is small snipet from the article:

Even when adopting the most drastic measures, record labels seem helpless to prevent albums from surfacing online before their release dates. So now one label is taking the “if you cant beat em, join em” approach.

Get the rest at MTV.com.

On a side note, you can hear the album streaming on the official The Secret Machines website. Im listening to it now. Interesting stuff…. Continue reading Has Hell Frozen Over?

Kurt Loader does Manyard Keenan

More music news by way of MTV.com. This time around, Kurt Loader has a great three page interview with Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle. Of course, Im sure you already new that. 🙂

Even mediocre fans should check this one out. Kind of strange, but cool at the same time. Sorta like Maynard, himself. My favorite part is right up front, when he starts talking about his Free Frances Bean T-shirt. Here is a snipet:

Oh, yeah, back in 96, 97. Everybody at that time was trying to get us to do all these benefit shows — you know, like “Free Tibet.” And I was like, “Im gonna have my own platform: Free Frances Bean.”

Get it at, where else, MTV.com.

MTV Interview with Dave Draiman of Disturbed

If you are a big fan of the band Disturbed, MTV.com has a great article with the lead singer, Dave Draiman.

“In mid-December, Disturbed announced that original bassist Fuzz had left the band after more than six years, and posted a message on their Web site telling musicians how to apply for the vacant slot. Frontman David Draiman is currently narrowing down the field of interested players and plans to bring four to six of them to Chicago in February for tryouts.”

Korn Releases New Album Early

Are you looking for the new Korn album? Well you can get it earlier than expected. Due to songs showing up on the Internet, Korn has moved their November 25th release date up to this Friday. MTV.com has the full scoop along with Korns reaction to the leaks.

Of course, the record label will blame the leak if the album does not sell very well and they will applaud moving the release date up if it does sell well. I think if the albums good, it will sell, regardless if it comes out this Friday or Next Tuesday. Then again, we all know the Record Labels just dont get it.
