Is emo the new incarnation of 80’s hair metal?
Inspired by the New York Post’s critical analysis of Crush management, Mtv.com has posted an article drawing connections between 80’s hair-metal (Motley Crue, Winger, Poison, Ratt, etc) and what they describe as “emo-punk” (bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Escape the Fate, etc). Among the many topics explored are comparisons on fashion, song subject matter, and of course, over-the-top hair styles.
The end of the article also brings to light an interesting concept of what may follow the current trend, or possibly end it:
And — perhaps more importantly — when emo-punk finally does die off, what will take its place? We all know that hair metal begat Nirvana, primarily because Kurt Cobain was the very antithesis of hair metal’s Pablum and posturing (but also because Nirvana were a great band). So what will succeed emo? If history is correct, it’ll be a band as far removed as possible from Fall Out Boy, one that plays totally insincere, totally ripping rock, and one fronted by a totally un-hirsute, totally ugly dude.
Which totally describes the Bronx, who are, coincidentally, also managed by Crush. There is no escape.
You can check out the full article here.

Guff collaborates with Steve Perry of Journey
Looks like Journey is popping up in more places than just incredibly frustrating finales. The band’s singer Steve Perry has apparently collaborated on some songs with Go Kart act Guff. Their label explained:
While Guff was in the studio, Steve Perry, the legendary lead singer of Journey, walked in to visit a friend. He was so impressed with Guff that he showed up unannounced two days later and asked Guff to cover an unreleased Journey song. Steve not only produced the song “I Can See It In Your Eyes” but also sang on it!
The cover will appear on the band’s upcoming album. The record is titled Symphony Of Voices and is due out June 26, 2007.

Damiera reforms
Buffalo, New York’s Damiera has reunited after briefly splitting up in April. The band has replaced the departed members and announced the additions of guitarist Steve Downs and drummer Josh Sparks, formerly of the Iowa-based band Spirit of the Stairway, and Jayson Dezuzio, a long time professional producer whose resume includes work with Coheed and Cambria, My Chemical Romance, and more.
The band had this to say:
The departing members were “seeking satisfaction elsewhere [and] they wanted to take another road for now… without having to be committed to a group setting.”
I love music, and I will continue to let go of every excess (money, home, health, etc) in order to find my end in it. I have been extremely fortunate this far, but I’d rather end with nothing and satisfied than end with everything and not use it.
They released their EVR debut, M(US)ic, earlier this year. The album was originally issued in a limited supply in 2006 through The Built on Strength Recording Company.
The band plans to resume touring in August.
