Contests: The Swellers: “My Everest” is the ULTIMATE burrito

The Swellers recently released their debut LP, My Everest. To celebrate, they want to give you some free stuff. But there’s a catch. You see, the boys have a little vice. For some bands, it’s designer drugs, while others like to booze it up. For the Swellers…burritos. The bigger and sloppier, the better.

Here’s the deal. The band will give three lucky winners a copy of My Everest, a Swellers t-shirt and sticker pack, and a t-shirt from Offset Clothing. How do you win one of these prize packages? Well, we’ll help the band pick a winner for each of three categories relating to, you guessed it, burritos.

Rancid posts update, plans to record in January 2008

Rancid Rancid has posted an update on the progress towards their long-awaited new album. The band’s newest addition, drummer Branden Steineckert, explained:

Check out the Rancid myspace or rancidrancid.com for official updates and band info. Meanwhile pick up Tim Armstrongs solo record “A Poets Life”….it will give you what you need til then.

The legendary East Bay punk rockers have not released any new material since 2003’s Indestructible. The band went on an unofficial hiatus in 2004 while all members were busy concentrating on their own project. They did, however, reunite last year to embark on a successful tour before their original drummer Brett Reed left the band and then Used drummer Steineckert replaced him.

Joey Cape unveils new song, new project

Joey Cape of Lagwagon, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, Bad Astronaut and Afterburner has posted a new song and unveiled a new band which is currently titled Dead Penguin:

I just finished mixing this song. I wanted to post something before I left for tour with The Gimme Gimmes tomorrow. The song is called “This Is The Last Train”. O.K., So… This version was originally a demo. I later recorded it with another band. The band has no name. Actually, the band has about 20 names. We just can’t decide which one isn’t bad.

For now, I will refer to that band as “Dead Penguin”, my favorite title in the running. Dead Penguin’s version of the song is a rock version. I think it sounds like “Pinkerton” era Weezer. Anyway, I recorded an entire record with Dead Penguin in December 2006. That band is made up of 4 of my oldest friends and of course myself.

The full album should be complete by September. There is no label and no plans. I know what you’re thinking. Isn’t he in enough bands already? Yes I am. Dead Penguin was just a project purely for fun. I can’t wait for people to hear that record. It’s raw, unpolished and nothing like anything I’ve done.

You can check out the song on his myspace page.

The Offspring post status update, nearing end of recording

The Offspring frontman Dexter Holland has issued the following update via the band’s official website:

Working hard, it’s just taking awhile to get everything right. Every new part you record, you’re trying out different stuff to get just the right guitar, microphone, amp, whatever…I can tell you though, the couple songs we just finished sound like a friggin’ freight train…trying to get finished recording in the next month or so we’ll keep you posted.

The still-untitled new album is their follow-up to 2003’s Splinter and is expected in 2007 release via Columbia Records. It will mark the very first proper studio album recorded with drummer Atom Willard, who is the replacement of former member Ron Welty.

The band plans to play Japan in August, appearing at the Summer Sonic Festival on the 11th and 12th alongside bands like Sum 41, Avenged Sevenfold, Bloc Party, Interpol, and of course Cyndi Lauper.
