Video interview with Lookout! co-founder David Hayes

Transition Video Magazine recently interviewed David Hayes, the man who founded Lookout! Records with partner Lawrence Livermore. Hayes was also heavily involved in the start of the famous Gilman St venue as well as punk bible Maximum RnR. To top it all off, in 1988 he toured the US in a 1969 Chrylser Newport with a little band called Operation Ivy. Hayes walked away from the Bay Area scene just as punk broke into the mainstream, a time that left many of his peers very rich.

You can watch the video on the TVM website and get a great history lesson about a lesser known punk icon. You can check it out here.

Courtney Love claims Linda Perry to produce next Green Day record

Courtney Love has reportedly told the BBC that Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes will be producing the next Green Day record. She explained:

Now Courtney has revealed to 6 Music that Perry will produce the new Green Day album, the follow-up to the multi-million selling American Idiot. She said: “This is my best record. Corgan’s on it from the (Smashing) Pumpkins, and Linda Perry – who out of my record got the Green Day record. That’s a scoop – I just gave that away with my big mouth.

Linda Perry, the former singer of 4 Non Blondes and frequent songwriter for pop stars may seem like an unusual choice. Perry had a hit in 1993 with “What’s Up” but went on to greater success as a songwriter for Gwen Stefani, Pink and Christina Aguilera.

Microsoft launches “Ignition” program for emerging artists

Obscure startup Microsoft has launched a new program for emerging artists dubbed Ignition. According to a Reuters report, the program is “designed to expose new artists and their music to consumers for an entire month by featuring exclusive content through Microsoft’s multiple services — including MSN, Xbox Live and Zune.

Though the latter does not have a major footprint, both MSN and Xbox Live boast millions of subscribers. The company will host online listening parties of the act’s current album on MSN Music and provide a custom Web site dedicated to the band and its activities on the zune.net site. And Microsoft is working with the band to produce custom content — such as artist-created playlists and “behind-the-album” commentary featuring track-by-track insights and observations by band members — all available via the Zune service.

Microsoft is also demanding that artists participate directly in the program and provide exclusive conent not available elsewhere, particularly not on MTV. The first artist signed up is Caroline/Warp act Maximo Park, and more younger bands are expected to be showcased over the next while.
