Deftones working on next album, side-project prepare for second release

Deftones In a recent Billboard interview, experimental rock/metal band Deftones discussed plans for their next album. Frontman Chino Moreno discussed the bands interest in a more raw songwriting and recording process, which is in contrast to the band’s last effort, Saturday Night Wrist, which saw multiple producers come and go.

We’re going in there and playing as five of us in the room with just our instruments, no other distractions. That’s how we started out, basically, when we first started the band — us in the garage, no ProTools or anything to get us ahead of ourselves. We’d just play things over and over again, until we remembered it — that’s the rawest way you can do it, and the best, I think.

In related news, Moreno’s side-project, Team Sleep, have nearly completed their second album, which is planned for release in early 2008.

Video of the Week: Landmines (live in Richmond, VA)

LandminesWay back when, a group of guys from Massachusetts moved down to Richmond. A few went on to form the band that is now Smoke or Fire, the rest bummed around town working shitty jobs and playing in a few bands. They have since formed Landmines, playing a PBR-infused brand of hardcore. This footage comes from a recent show opening for their Boston brethren, and if you like what you see, the band is currently on the road.

Contests: Win a guitar from Chasing Victory

Need a new Peavey guitar? Well, it looks like the fellows in Chasing Victory happen to have an extra one and they want to give it to one of you. While they’re probably pretty generous dudes, this particular bit of generosity comes as the band celebrates the release of their new record, Fiends. The album finds the band moving away from hardcore and metalcore and incorporating more melodic elements that have been compared to bands like the Foo Fighters.

You can check out some music on their myspace page and you can visit this form to get your name in the running for the guitar.

Joey Cape (Lagwagon, Bad Astronaut) launches rarities Myspace Page.

Joey Cape of Lagwagon, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, Bad Astronaut and Afterburner, has launched a new solo page on myspace where he is posting rarities. He is promising home-recorded, largely acoustic material. He notes:

If you have discovered this site, you are probably wondering why there is no new music. It’s O.K. There will be soon. My plan is to randomly post anything I feel like posting, new songs, works in progress, side projects and other’s recordings I was involved in. I will even post some old demos, most likely regretful, terribly embarrassing demos. Anyway, should be fun for me and I think you will enjoy it as well.

You can check out the music on his myspace page.
