Despite appearing in the movie itself, Green Day will not be appearing on the soundtrack to the Simpsons movie. Instead, the disc mostly features popular rap acts and contributions from Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco and Lifehouse.
Though bashing major labels is a raison d’etre for some members of the punk community, some particularly loud condemnations are coming from some higher profile places. First, industry pundit Bob Lefsetz recently wrote a scathing editorial criticizing major labels and arguing why bands should refrain from joining them.
Similarly, the outspoken and daring Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails recently spoke about his feelings:
It’s a very odd time to be a musician on a major label, because there’s so much resentment towards the record industry that it’s hard to position yourself in a place with the fans where you don’t look like a greedy asshole. […]
That’s also why you don’t see any label people here, ‘cos I said ‘F— you people. Stay out of my f—ing show. If you wanna come, pay the ticket like anyone else. F— you guys”. They’re thieves. I don’t blame people for stealing music if this is the kind of s— that they pull off.
I’ve have one record left that I owe a major label, then I will never be seen in a situation like this again. If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal.
You can read Bob’s editorial here while Trent’s interview can be found here.
The makers of the smash hit video game Guitar Hero have announced some of the music which will be playable in the upcoming third revision of the franchise. Leading the way will be tracks by Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Muse, Rolling Stones, Kiss, Living Colour and more.

In his latest ‘State Of The Union’ post over on the vinyl collective blog, Virgil from Suburban Home Records/Vinyl Collective is releasing details of the label’s upcoming releases — including the much-anticipated Armchair Martian discography.
We just booked 3 releases for August 7th: Drag the River/Dents split LP/CD; Armchair Martian “Good Guys, Bad Band” discography; and Tim Barry “Laurel St Demos” LP/CD. The Drag/Dents split features both bands doing the exact same 4 songs: 2 of their own and then 2 covers of the 2 songs that the other band does. Make sense? It is a fun release and will be limited to 1,000 copies on CD and 250 copies on LP. The Armchair Martian discography features the entire “Monsters Always Scream” record plus a lot of b-sides and tracks that had never been released.
Vagrant has signed The A-Sides. The Philadelphia, PA-based band previously released Hello, Hello in 2005 via Prison Jazz. The album earned a rave review from our staff reviewer who noted:
Hello, Hello is at its core an example of how good music will transcend age and find a suitable crowd
A local Utah ABC affiliate has assembled the latest in a series of reactionary reports “alerting” parents to the dangers of “emo.” Like most stories, it focuses on the perceived fears and ostensibly discusses the “cutting” and suicide undercurrents of the scene.
The piece relies heavily on Internet reports, but also like many of these reports, it doesn’t properly distinguish between genuine emo and those making fun of emo and presents a perfectly surreal account.
Seaweed has announced plans for a reunion show, and a new record:
All rumors are true. Seaweed is getting it together to do a reunion show at Bumbershoot, Seattle’s greatest music festival. Date/place/time is September 2 at the EMP Sky Church-9:30 PM.
The band is shockingly thrilled to get back together and play in front of our friends and fans once again. All members have returned except they are now playing with long-time friend Jesse Fox of Polecat and Leuko, two excellent NW bands.
Also Jesse and I are working hard on new tracks as well in a shack in South Tacoma–demos should be complete by the end of summer.
The best Seaweed album is yet to come. Tentative title-Small Engine Repair.
The Tacoma, Washington-based band started out releasing material on their own Leopard Gecko imprint in 1989, before moving onto a vinyl single with K Records, signing to Sub Pop a few years later for their career building albums “Despised,” “Weak,” and “Four.” Then Hollywood Records picked the band up in 1993 and released their largest album to date, 1995’s “Spanaway,” their bombastic major label offering. Lasting only 1 album on Hollywood, the band and label unhitched and Seaweed then moved back to the indies. Merge Records issued their final release in 1999, “Actions and Indications” turned into their swan song and the band split later the same year.
