MC Lars: “Twenty-Three”

MC Lars has posted the video for his track, “Twenty-Three.” The song comes from his 2009 album This Gigantic Robot Kills and is a serious subject for the normally satirical “laptop rapper.” The song looks back at Patrick Wood who died by suicide. Our reviewer commented on the song’s appearance on the album:

[It is] a somber track about a college roommate (who was featured on Lars’ debut album, Radio Pet Fencing) who committed suicide. Aside from the sad tone, the track helps personalize the artist, bring more attention to depression and suicide, and balances the flow of the album.

To that end, Lars partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for the video. He commented on the video and the partnership:

We contacted AFSP, an organization that had helped Patrick’s mother as she dealt with the loss of her son. We told them we wanted to make a video for ‘Twenty-three’ and asked if they wanted to join forces to spread our message of suicide prevention and survival after suicide. They loved the song and graciously pledged their support.

Think Fast! signs Ice Age (members of This Is Hell, the Backup Plan)

Think Fast! Records have signed Ice Age. The band includes current former members of notable Long Island hardcore acts including This Is Hell and The Backup Plan. Vocalist and founding member Jeff Tiu comments:

The best thing about this band is that we do whatever we want. With other bands I’ve been in there was always a goal in terms of touring a certain amount, attaining a certain level of success and so on. Everyone in Ice Age has either a full time band or a career which leaves us in the unique position – it’s actually quite a luxury. No one likes us when we play? So what, we had fun. No one buys our merch? Who cares, I had fun designing it. We’re not lighting up the message boards? Big deal. We’re doing this because we love it and anything beyond that is just gravy.

The band will release their debut, Dead Kings, through the label and references are made to hardcore legends Sick Of It All and metallic hardcore pioneers Unbroken. The album will be released on LP and digital formats, with no plans for a CD version. The title track can be found on their MySpace page.

Trailer posted for documentary with Fat Mike, Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, Anti-Flag

The trailer has been released for Sounds Like a Revolution, a new documentary about political activism that we first mentioned in April. The film features Henry Rollins, Fat Mike of NOFX, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, Jello Biafra, Justin Sane of Anti-Flag and others and the recently completed film was directed by Summer Preney and Jane Michener and written by Margaret Susan Martin. The summary described the film:

Sounds Like a Revolution is a pro-active and energizing documentary about a new generation of activist musicians who are living proof that music is an important and powerful tool in the ongoing struggle for social change. From the Dixie Chicks to Michael Franti to the punk band Anti-Flag, artists across the musical spectrum recount their motivations and struggles in a post-9/11 environment where dissent was silenced and censorship was commonplace. With themes that explore the role of artists in society, freedom of expression and democratic participation, Sounds Like a Revolution presents a unique historical perspective behind the new wave of protest music sweeping America and offers new hope for the future.

AFI talks about second Blaqk Audio release

Blaqk Audio AFI‘s Davey Havok recently spoke with AFI News HQ about plans for a second Blaqk Audio release. The band is the electronic sideproject of Havok and his AFI bandmate, Jade Puget. Davey had this to say:

There is so much material that we have… Jade and I have been talking about which songs are going to go where, and we’ve had thoughts of releasing EP’s and singles… it’s really difficult to create a record because I feel that so much is going to be left out.

According to the report, the band has tracked 33 songs already and plans are underway for a release sometime after AFI wraps up the touring cycle for 2009’s Crash Love.

Blaqk Audio released CexCells in 2007.
