Against Me! adds Franz Nicolay as touring member

Against Me! has recruited multi-instrumentalist Franz Nicolay (The Hold Steady, World/Inferno Friendship Society) as touring member beginning with their upcoming European tour. The band made the announcement:

We’re very happy to welcome Franz Nicolay out on the road with us! Starting with this next run of Europe dates Franz will be joining us onstage every night and lending his immense talents and presence to the band.

Franz released two solo records in 2009: St. Sebastian of the Short Stage [10 inch] and Major General. Against Me! is gearing up for the release of their second major label album and first with drummer George Rebelo (Hot Water Music), White Crosses.

Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters, Me First) announces new solo album

Chris Shiflett & The Dead Peasants, the new project from Chris Shiflett of Jackson United, Foo Fighters, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, No Use for a Name and others, have set a release date for their eponymous debut. The record is due out July 13, 2010 via Le Coq Napoleon/RCA and sees Chris tackling “Americana-laced rock songs.” Chris attributes the sound to influences like classic country artists (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings), rockabilly (Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran), and deep-rooted rock bands (The Rolling Stones, The Replacements),

The album’s additional instrumentation was performed by an array of musicians, including Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello and The Imposters, Jenny Lewis, John Hiatt) on bass, Greg Leisz (Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Whiskeytown) on pedal steel, Stevie Blacke (Beck, Weezer, Colbie Caillat) on violin and mandolin, and Audra Mae on backing vocals.

Avenged Sevenfold to release “Nightmare”

Avenged Sevenfold have announced a title and release date for their upcoming fifth album. The record is titled Nightmare and is due out July 17, 2010 via Warner. It is the follow-up to Avenged Sevenfold which was released in 2007. The album was produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem) and mixed by noted engineer Andy Wallace.

In August, Avenged Sevenfold will set out co-headlining the first annual Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival with Disturbed. Also on the bill are Stone Sour, Halestorm, and Hell Yeah. The UPROAR tour, which will hit amphitheatres and arenas, marks the band’s first tour since the passing of drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater plays drums on Nightmare and will also tour with the band for UPROAR.

This Will Destroy You: “Communal Blood”

This Will Destroy You have posted the track, “Communal Blood.” The song is the first taste of music from the band’s next LP, Tunnel Blanket and will also appear on a limited 12-inch sold directly by the band on their upcoming tour. The album is the first since This Will Destroy You in 2008 which also earned a spot on a Best of 2008 list here at Punknews.org.

Tours: Hole / Foxy Shazam

Hole has announced that their upcoming month-long reunion tour will begin June 22nd and feature support from Foxy Shazam. Hole released Nobody’s Daughter this year, their first new album in eight years. First formed in Los Angeles in 1989, the band was together until 2002. Since then, frontwoman Courtney Love has become better known as gatekeeper of Kurt Cobain’s estate. The band’s most critically acclaimed album, Live Through This, was released just days after Cobain’s suicide in 1994.

Skeleton Crew to release The Scandals’ new album

Skeleton Crew Records, the punk and hardcore label formed by Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance, has announced the release of a new album from New Jersey’s Scandals. The melodic punk band will be releasing their album, The Sound Of Your Stereo, in June.

Swingin’ Utters to release “Brand New Lungs” 7-inch

Swingin' Utters Prior to their upcoming new full length, Here, Under Protest, Swingin’ Utters will be releasing a new 7-inch titled Brand New Lungs. The release, due out June 22, 2010 on vinyl and digital, is their first new release since 2003’s Dead Flowers, Bottles, Bluegrass, and Bones.

The band will also be hitting the road for a run of dates beginning in June. Check those dates out here. Earlier this year, the band was the subject of a tribute album titled Untitled 21: A Juvenile Tribute to Swingin’ Utters.

Bad Religion: “30 Years Live”

A stream has been launched for Bad Religion‘s new, free live album: 30 Years Live. The 17-track album kicks off with “Fuck Armageddon, This is Hell” and covers the band’s Epitaph Records and major label releases up to “Los Angeles is Burning” from 2007’s New Maps of Hell.

Polar Bear Club, Strike Anywhere, Bled, Of Mice and Men at Bled Fest 2010

Polar Bear Club, Misery Signals, The Bled, Strike Anywhere, in Fear and Faith, Of Mice and Men, The Swellers, LA Dispute and Trash Talk have been enlisted as headliners for the upcoming Bled Fest 2010. The event will take place on May 29, 2010 in Howell, Michigan and feature 61 bands performing on 5 stages in a one-day event. Tickets are $15.00 in advance, and $20.00 at the door, and doors open at 11:30am.

Other bands set to appear include Before Their Eyes, Native, Brothers, Balance and Composure, The Felix Culpa, This Town Needs Guns, Castevet, Your Best Friend, Fight Fair, Tall Ships and Accidents. The full lineup can be found here.
